CarComplaints.com Notes: There's no way around it, the Cherokee's transmission is junk. There's no other explanation for why a vehicle, usually with under 40,000 miles, would have so many complaints

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk. 1000 miles. Down hill on 405 from valley, I used Select shift instead of brakes to maintain speed with flow of traffic. I had shifted up to 9th just out of curiosity and shifted down to lower gears as needed and all was working well. In about 2 minutes on the dashboard display I noticed number of what gear I was in changed to the "D" for drive. Moved shift stick back and forth between "Select Drive and D offered no changes. The MIL light came on (Malfunction Indicator Light located on tach adjacent to number "7" ) and the Traction control light located in same area also lit up. The Traction Control hard button on dash panel was not showing activation and would not toggle on or off when pressing.

Pulled off of the 405 and noticed car was not shifting as 60 MPH was taching 3500 RPM. Seemed to be stuck in 3rd or 4th gear as acceleration was labored at under 1500 RPM. Stopped car. Turned key off, waited to the count of 10 and restarted car. Traction control light was off and responded to toggle on and off. Shifting was working good and would downshift with light touch on throttle. MIL light is still on but no repeating of shifting problems. Select shift works OK. Have an appointment with dealer on Monday morning. Scarey problem to happen on long down hill. I was only 10 miles from home luckily.

Update from Dec 30, 2014: The MIL light resets its self after 2 succesful restarts when no more malfunctions are indicated. Also, read the owners manual for correct sequence for using 4 wheel low range and all of the optional choices. I got a SVC 4WD light on dash with 4WD Not Available. At dealer today. Hope it is just a resetting of 4WD system.

Update from Jan 3, 2015: Dealer reset SVC 4WD malfunction light. found no problems. Test drive was successful. Gotta read the Owners manual until I have these things memorized I guess.
