This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Passenger side motor mount failure. Three bolts secure motor mount bracket to engine block. All three sheared off causing engine/transmission assembly to shift pushing fan into radiator, ruining both. Vehicle undrivable, repair bill over $500 not including towing. This occured after driving over a minor parking lot pot hole at less than 20 mph. Upon inspection, two of the three sheared off bolt studs were rusty, indicating that those two bolts had been broken for a while. This is a design defect that Chrysler needs to acknowledge and correct. This vehicle has not been abused to my knowledge, and numerous other Jeep owners on internet have reported this same problem (rec.autos.makers.Jeep+willys). Since this is not a common automotive failure, something is obviously wrong with the original mount design. Thank you for looking into this.
This is a safety issue with this 95 Cherokee, the three mount bolts for the engine mount have sheared twice in the last four years, I read in the newspaper a lady wrote in who had a similar problem and lost control of her vehicle. I believe a research of Jeep's inventory and service records for these bolts I wll show a high level of activity that should warrant a recall to install stronger bolts. These bolts could fail in a intersted crusing scenario and seriously injury or kill the occupants. The dealer said this is an ongoing problem with certain Cherokee. I believe Jeep has swept this serious problem under the rug, and now the vehicle is out of production, but a huge number are still on the road. Over all this vehicle has been one of the best we have ever owned, except for this dangerous safety issue that until has not been rectified by the factory. Fyi, the second set of bolts installed the dealer went with non-oem bolts due to a lack of confidence in the Jeep bolts called out in the parts catalog! regards, george kasey
The engine mounts have been replaced 4 times, also the vehicle would crank, but would not start, dealer replaced the crank sensor, there was a leak coming from the vehicle, possibly an oil leak.
I heard a thud and a loud rattle when backing out of garage. I drove to mechanic and heard a rattle with every bump. Mechanic said bolts sheered off in motor. Please respond.
While driving vehicle during hot weather it will just cut off at speeds anywhere from 45-65 mph. Sometimes the Jeep will come back on if driver hits accelerator pedal hard. The dealer is not able to correct problem with the Jeep.
Driving at approxmately 55 mph when bolt that holds right side of motor had fallen, causing the engine to fall onto distributor. Gearshift and reverse became inoperative due to this defect. This could have resulted in an accident.the 2 other bolts had rusted and fallen off.
Vehicle stalled out for no apparent reason; would stall out at stop signs/light; speed would vary; tried starting & nothing happened; has occurred several times before; took dealer in ak & could not find anything; took dealer in vt & could not find problem.
