This timing chain issue was caused by the age of the engine and the nature of the engine design. With 167k miles, this engine was worn. The first symptom of the bad timing chain was a loud rattling noise on startup and rattling noises at idle. You could audibly hear the chain "slap." The second symptom of the bad timing chain was camshaft position sensor codes. Several codes pertaining to all 4 of my camshaft position sensors were re-appearing even after replacing all sensors. This indicated a bad timing chain and associated timing components.
