While driving at 65 MPH down the highway, I heard a freakin' loud explosion followed by a shower of shattered glass blowing down on me and the inside of the car. The sunroof had exploded!! I called my insurance company (USAA) to report it and they were happy to process my claim at no charge (no fault claim). However while I was on hold, I Googled, "Hyundai Sunroof Exploding". As it turns out, there is a class action law suit against Hyundai and a recall. There are five Hyundai models (Santa Fe Sport, Elantra GT, Sonata, Tucson and Veloster) with this problem on model years 2011-2013 (depending on MFG date). Hyundai indicates they believe that the sunroofs were damaged during manufacturing/mechanical installation.
So when USAA came back on the line, I informed them of this recall and stated that I would rather the Hyundai pay for a known defect rather than my insurance company.
I then called my local Hyundai dealer, Luther Hyundai in Bloomington, MN and they checked my VIN and stated that the previous owner (I'm the second) did not respond to the recall notification and did not have it replaced in 2013. So they asked me to bring it in and they would replace it and provide me with a loaner car! Great job Luther!
