Check engine and oil light kept coming on. We have spent thousands of dollars replacing parts associated with codes P0333 and P0422. Experienced sudden stalls, lurches, loss of power, excessive oil consumption. Replaced spark plugs (twice), purge valve, induction coils, water pump. The oil and CEL lights keep returning.
Meanwhile the dealership got us on early maintenance like coolant flush, changed all of our brake pads, brake flush. They replaced the oil and filters, sparkplugs, serviced the fuel induction, multipoint inspections, checked the valves (though replaced them after the check engine light came on again three days later. I'll fill out a second complaint, but will summarize an overview here). This is the 1.6L GDI Gamma engine. Dealer installed the 966 campaign ECU software update under recall warranty though that's for the 2015, 2016, 2019 Veloster. Ours is 2012. This has been a huge waste of time and money with Hyundai wanting customers to pay for new engines.
After the light came back on, after the second set of repairs in two months, our car just failed out-of-town on the highway the next day (The next day!): sputtering, loss of acceleration power, white smoke from under the car. My family pulled over immediately and was not hurt. Coolant level was fine but oil was all burned up. Misfire codes back and now a apparently there was a hole in the engine block. We never had a mechanical failure of this level with this car. Just the recurring error codes and lots of money spent trying to maintain the car, must of which is pointless after that failure (except the brake pads!), and solve the check engine light, along with the occasional stalls, sputters, and oil consumption.
Update from Dec 19, 2021: Update: I have newer info on the 966 software. It was not an update for a newer model. It was an update to enhance the knock sensor relate to rod bearing wear, as many of these GDI Gamma engines (especially the Ulsan manufacture in that year but there are many complaints in later models) have issues where rod bearing issue caused fire and fire-related problems...and can result in a punctured engine block.
I will be posting a separate complaint bout the ECU updates that should have been done in lieu of our engine diagnostic codes. Thanks
