My wife's 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport has failed twice in the last month. The car becomes almost impossible to steer, and is a serious safety hazard. However, once you restart the car, the steering goes back to normal. I call the local dealer ship and make an appointment. The service adviser makes it sound like this is the first time this issue has come up - and says there are no recalls for this make and model. A google search says that 175,000 cars were recalled for a similar issue, so judging by all of the consumer complaints I've seen online, this seems like a common problem that Hyundai needs to address before we start seeing lives lost.

My 2017 Sonata, as many others, is having multiple issues with the steering. It started about a month ago, mid turn, my steering wheel gave super easy turning to the left and would hardly turn to the right. I kept driving a few miles not knowing what had happened and it made my power steering and traction control go out at highway speeds. Luckily I had a shoulder to pull off on. After stopping and restarting it, it seems to work just fine. Since then, I have had 6 more instances with the steering issues and luckily have been able to pull off on the side of the road each time. I am no longer comfortable driving it and am having it towed tomorrow to a dealership.

I did speak to a mechanic shop prior and he actually told me that I would HAVE to take it to the dealership since they have the proper equipment to work with this issue. He has personally turned away MANY other Sonata drivers for the EXACT same issue. This is going to end up getting someone seriously injured, or killed. HYUNDAI, YOU NEED TO RECALL THE STEERING COLUMN!! THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE!

If you drive this vehicle personally, PLEASE reach out to NHTSA and file a complaint so that we can get this recalled for the safety of all of us! Please take the time to fill out the information, it will end up saving a lot of unnecessary issues.

POWER STEERING OUT!! This happened to me once when my car was at about 47,000 miles and again recently at 134,000 miles!! Fortunately when it happened the first time two years ago my car was still under warranty. So I didn’t pay anything out of pocket for repairs. Unfortunately, this time it isn’t under warranty. The Hyundai dealership said it will cost me $2800 to fix!! $2300 for the part which they said will be the entire steering column and $500 for labor. I just don’t understand why these vehicles haven’t been recalled yet when you can go to sites like this or YouTube and various others and see where owners of these cars are having the exact same problem!!

It starts with your steering wheel locking up randomly while you are driving it but you are able (if able to) to stop the car, cut it off, crank it back up and then it works again. This goes on a couple weeks to a month and then one day you’ll try to turn it and it won’t go. The traction and power steering lights come on and it’s over. This is very unfortunate to car owners, especially ones like me who still owe a pretty large amount on their vehicles and Hyundai don’t won’t do a trade because you have no down payment. It’s ridiculous really!!

On 01/16/2020, I was leaving work and just as I was exiting the parking lot my steering seized up! Within a minute I was finely able to get some movement from the steering but power steering was gone.

Power steering light was on as well as the traction control light. I turned the car off and back on and the power steering was restored and all the indicators lights were off. I'm going to Dealership tomorrow so I will update. However, had this happened while I was driving 50+ miles an hour as I have to on the highway this would have been a very dangerous situation!

Now I'm afraid to drive my car but it is the only one I have.

On 8/12&16/2019 I felt and heard a clunking noise while turning the steering wheel both CW and CCW. Drove about 200 feet and the dash indicator lights for steering and traction lit. I am now in traffic and the power steering fails. I drive about quarter mile to spot I can pull off and trying to turn was very very difficult. Being this is first time I have no idea what the F---- is happening. I shut car off and let it set for about 5 minutes and started it up and the power steering is back. Now I am totally confused and afraid to drive this vehicle. I get home since I am retired and was only a mile away and made it...whew....

I immediately call the dealer and report it and express my concern for urgent care but they only said the day they could see car for assessment which was 8/23/2019. So this being my only car and asked if loaner vehicle could be arranged and they said only way they could accommodate that was their inspection resulted in a warranty designation(my car was purchased 9/6/2017 and was still under warranty). So I am stuck with this car and fear this happening again and on 8/16/2019 backing out of a drive way it fails again, So now I am totally POd. SHUT IGNITION OFF WAITED 5 MINUTES steering back. I limp along until 8/23 only driving as necessary without power steering fail.

On 8/23 the dealer technician tells me sorry but their diagnostic check did not show any errors for this fail. By this time I have shown the other reported fails for 2017 Sonatas indicate on this complaint page stating that one car out of 11 reported fails was fixed per Hyundai's technical support direction, to my dealer's Service Mgr.and Tech Rep. And I quote their responses "We don't read those listings". To say the least I am now ready to go ballistic.

Now I an totally pissed off....They really help Customer relation by offering me a ride home knowing this was my only means of transportation and no solution to this dangerous defect AND I LIVE 20 MILES AWAY! The only car that was fixed in the above complaints was stated to my dealer's Tech Rep and he still just blew me off.

So if you are an owner of any year SONATA be aware of this major, dangerous defect! I solved the steering defect problem myself on 8/24/2019 I bought a Toyota Camry and for me it's bye, bye Hyundai! Good luck to all who own these Lemons and I hope no one has a major accident.

Had my son's car towed to Hyundai dealership after electric steering failed. Dealership did recalls first then tried to identify issue with steering. They found no code set and tried to reproduce problem by just turning car on and off. When they finally drove it, they could not reproduce problem. Had to ask service manager to trouble shoot by searching web for similar issues. He did and I asked him if he could look into the solutions mention/identified parts that were a problem and He then offered me the phone number for Hyundai Customer relations. The representative compiled a report and tole me it would be 3-5 days before I would get an answer. I inquired about a loaner car as I will not be able to take my son to school and work and she said that is handled at a dealership level. My son is 18 and cannot rent a car nor drive a loner. Service manager now says he is consulting Hyundai technical support to help solve.

Update from May 3, 2019: I suggested they look on line as I had seen posts describing same problem and at least one had a suggested fix. Several hours later, they call me back to tell me they consulted with Hyundai Techline and were told to replace the steering column under warranty. They replaced the next day. My son says it is very much better than before in general!!
