It just randomly died the other day while driving. We've had this problem "fixed" once, had a new engine put in in 2021, and the engine was also overheating in the past.

Sonata SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 77,561 miles

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata died while I was on the highway going home from work. I had it towed to an auto shop where they replaced my starter and gave me an oil change. The car started however it had a slight knocking noise but I was given the green light to drive it. On the way home, the car died again (same as previously with all of the lights on but no turnover for the engine) and this time I had it towed directly to the Hyundai dealership.

Once at the dealership I was told that they wouldn't be able to look at the car for fifteen days! I continuously called to check on the status of the inspection and eventually I was informed that the diagnostic showed that the timing chain belt broke causing the engine to fail and the engine would need to be replaced. I was quoted $10,400 for used engine with 63,000 miles (the older engines produced by other manufacturers are more reliable than the new engines manufactured directly by Hyundai) and $8,700 for a new engine. Keep in mind in purchased the car 09/27/2017 with a cosigner (my Mom) and the car was still covered for powertrain issues for 10 years/100,000 miles.

The timing chain is only replaced every 100,000 miles so at 77,561 miles on a car that is 5years and 6 months old SHOULD NOT be broken! When I attempted to bring up my warranty, Hyundai has done everything to not honor the warranty. I have given them copies of my bill of sale, oil changes, service records and my registration yet /they are still stalling. The newest issue they are bringing up is that the car registration isn't current,....the car is undriveable so unable to pass the safety and emissions test required for registration as explained by the DMV. What impact does that have on the original owner and the warranty?!?!? Don't buy from these scam artists.

There I was in a hit and run and the car was chasing me on the freeway. I got off the freeway - he ran me three times hard in the back and my car just disabled itself. I tried to start it - it will not it wouldn't start, so I had it towed to the mechanic and my insurance company paid for a new motor a new engine. But mind you, I am still buying this car and this incident happened 6 months from the time I bought the car, and now that the mechanic put the engine in there now, it won't start, and the air conditioner does not work this car is a total problem and I don't understand why a 2017 need a new engine because it was hit from the back. I am really really irritated - I have no car, I cannot get to work, and I'm still paying monthly payments on this car.

Sonata 4 cyl

Randomly the day prior my traction control light was on dash when I drove home from work. Looked in manual and read that it should reset when I turned off engine (although not sure why it was on in the first place) This morning it was not on. Drove to work fine but after leaving i drove about 2 miles I was turning from red light and as I accelerated it felt as if someone had slammed on the brakes jerking forward my foot still on gas pedal. Before I could even realize what happened it then began to move forward and a warning light came on. I was able to coast to a parking lot as I was afraid to push on pedal again. I had to give it gas to get into the lot and was able to pull into a parking spot.

Turned off car and it started right back up. I was only approx 2 miles from home. Pulled out of lot fine but as I was turning about 10 miles down street, it did it again. Jerked and then accelerated fine. Again at the next light turning it did the same thing. I am still afraid to give it gas so accelerating slowly and most of the way home was downhill luckily. About 1 mile later I had to turn on my street and this time I nearly hit the steering wheel (yes I had my belt on) as I had to accelerate and car jerked several times before it accelerated and I was able to get home.

Husband had already called dealership and we had begun to drive the car but the problem persisted so called Hyundai roadside who towed the car to Kerry Hyundai in Alexandria Ky. Had to find a ride out here as this is our only vehicle. So now instead of being at my cousins rehearsal dinner for the wedding tomorrow I am sitting in the waiting area at the dealership reading about all the same types of problems with other Sonatas. Luckily I did not have kids in the car when this happened or had another car hit me due to not accelerating like a normal car should. I was also informed that if they have to keep my car they likely do not have a loaner car. The roadside assistant rep told me to keep all my receipts and info Hyundai MAY reimburse me. Not holding my breath after reading others comments. They should be held accountable for this as it’s not an isolated incident. I love my car but am hesitant to drive it again and am very saddened by all of this...

This is the second time my car has shut off while driving, no check engine lights, no warning just stops running. Luckily there was no one behind me at the time. I see there are quite a few of this same complaint but yet no one can fix the problem, a little scary and concerning.

Not sure what to do I know it frightens me just stalling like that what happens if it does it and I am doing a high speed on the highway?? So far it has only happened on secondary roads and at like stop lights. Should I call Hyundai and complain??

Sonata Limited 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 16,000 miles

I was driving in town at approximately 30 MPH and coming to a small hill so stepped on gas a little. Car shut off with no "check engine light". No lights, no steering , no brakes so had little control of car. A life threatening situation. When car came to a stop I was able to put in park and start the car. Luckily there was no traffic at the time.

I called Hyundai corporate due to potential seriousness of situation. They were of no help other than take to dealership even though no "check engine light" came on. My local dealership claimed there was no problem and nothing to fix. Hyundai claimed they knew of no one else with this problem although I told them I found many complaints on the internet going back to this problem beginning and continuing for 20 years. A class action law suit is in place on older cars for this situation but not on newer cars, at least not yet.

If you would like to work with me please advise through your comments.

This is the FOURTH time this has happened in this car. I bought the car BRAND NEW and each time I take it in they tell me they cannot re-create the issue and do not know what is wrong. The first time was the same day I got my first oil change and I called back to the dealership. Because it started back up, I thought it was a fluke. It happened 2 other times and I took it in. They replaced the crank shaft under recall. Today, they told me it is no longer under dealership warranty! I see this issue all over the web. Something is going on! Not my first rodeo with a Hyundai Sonata issue that resulted in complete engine replacement. They will not take ownership until someone gets hurt.

Same Problem: Hybrid Failure Shut Off Engine. However, this occurred in Harrisburg, PA while going over a long bridge over the Potomac River. The engine went into LIMP Mode which propels vehicle a 20 MPH. No place to pull over. Semi Trucks coming from behind.... very, very scary.

Contacted BlueLink and got appointment with Massey Hyundai in Hagerstown, MD No problem could be found by this dealer.

Sonata ES Sport

Engine died, all lights turned off while driving on a street. Was able to pull over, put the car in park and restart. Brought the car to the dealer who said they couldn't diagnose the problem or duplicate the event. Called Hyundai, waiting for call back. Thank God that I wasn't driving on the highway, otherwise could have caused a major crash!
