shattered panoramic sunroof shattered panoramic sunroof

The experience was horrific. I was driving on the fwy when all of a sudden a heard a super loud gun shot like sound. I was so frightened that I had to pull over. I was mid way to my destination which I still needed a 30min drive to get there. The flapping on the inside of the sunroof was scary because pieces of the shattered glass started coming inside the vehicle. Luckily my baby wasn't with me because he likes to have to sun roof open to look up at the sky.

I called my auto insurance and told them what had happened. I was asked if the vehicle was drivable. I said it drives but I am not willing to drive it in that shape because the shattered glass is dropping inside the vehicle. I explained that I was 1hr away from home and would need to get back on the fwy, besides the shattered glass is flying out and can damage other vehicles or have me stopped by a hwy patrol and give me a citation. I had to leave my vehicle at a friends house and had it towed to repair shop from there.

shattered panoramic sunroof

About two months after I took my car to the dealership regarding the rattling noise from the panoramic sunroof (they applied lubricant to the rubber seal), the sunroof on my 2015 Sonata Limited exploded/shattered while my wife drove down the freeway. This is similar to complaints I've read from Veloster owners. Fortunately it didn't lead to an accident or any injuries. We immediately took it to the dealership. After about 10 minutes of cop style questioning from the local Hyundai representative, we were told the damage was done by a debris or vandalism. We were in disbelief. How could the car be vandalized while driving down the freeway? Wouldn't the windshields or windows be the most likely target of the vandalism if that were the case?

The representative treated us like criminals (probably because we're under 30?). He said he has worked there for eight years and has never heard of or seen similar issues so I asked him to Google it. To their credit, they gave us a loaner vehicle and said they would send a picture to Hyundai and ask if they'll cover it under warranty. I just got a call letting me know that Hyundai said the damage was caused by an outside impact and they cannot take responsibility. I don't mean to sound like an angry whiner, but if a manufacturer cannot stand by and take ownership of their faults, I cannot do business with them. This is our second Hyundai and I'm convinced this will be the last one. I'd rather forego the nice features than worry about build quality.

Am I the first one to experience this?
