This is a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.4 L DOHC GDI engine. Car rental program vehicle purchased from dealer ( certified used vehicle) with 29000 miles. Last week, had engine oil changed at "speedy oil express" and then at national auto repair chain. Both places showed oil level as being overfilled. As the consumer, I am troubleshooting, last solution is to go to Hyundai dealer and verify I have correct oil dipstick as per the VIN. The dealer service rep says wrong dip stick- so, order the correct one and when it arrives it is same as current dipstick. Showed the Hyundai service rep that both original and replacement dipstick show overfill. Now, I tell Hyundai service rep y'all change the oil. I return later and oil level at proper fill level as per replacement dipstick. They used a 5W-30 synthetic oil blend instead of 5W-20 conventional as the previous two changes. His explanation for syn/bld is that it is recommended for this area of country. Hyundai auto manual indicated 5W-20 is sufficient for this area. This vehicle was manufactured at Alabama plant on Sept 6 2014. My instincts tells me that the oil channels are partially blocked. The "speedy oil express" rep mentioned that he see's this on Hyundai vehicles, recently another customer had the same complaint about over fill. I told my adult daughter (her vehicle), change the oil at recommended interval at the Hyundai dealer ship. This will be reported to NHTSA.
Update from Mar 14, 2018: So, daughter says I am going out of town, tomorrow. I have not checked this vehicle since date of original post and do my preventive check. Then, the oil dipstick registers no oil. It takes 3 quarts of 5W-20 to register to fill line. So, the car may be model year 2015- the engine inside is 2014 manufactured at the Alabama facility. Keep telling them children about performing PM checks. Hopefully, recall will cover engine manufacture date, instead of Model Year.
Update from May 27, 2021: May 28, 2021. Joined the class action Theta engine settlement and been Denied. Reason being < no diagnostic provided for engine regarding issue. >
Well, that Theta engine still was defective, it was made at the Alabama plant. Now awaiting response for where to send Appeal. That information is not available at the sources I have available.
