Our car was serviced by southwest Hyundai dealer in albuquerque on 7/6, and although it was idling rough, they told us our car was safe to continue our vacation to co. The next morning, 30 miles later on I 25 we were traveling the speed limit, and a clanking noise started and smoke poured out from under the hood...we pulled over immediately. Billows of smoke. We called 911 and road assistance. Santa Fe fire dept forced hood open and flooded the engine. Car was towed to sante fe Hyundai fiesta. Our insurance company inspected and said the car was totaled. Hyundai corporate will be inspecting the car to try and determine cause. According to geico adjuster, that may not be possible. Everything melted.

While driving the vehicle, the air conditioning stopped working. I took it to the dealership and they told me that the blower relay had melted to the box it was in. As such, he was going to have to replace the entire wiring harness. He also indicated that had I not brought it in, the vehicle could catch fire while driving. I told him this is a safety issue and Hyundai should take care of the bill. Hyundai said no and the bill is going to be $5,000.

1/2 mile after starting my vehicle and driving approx 30 mph, my car shuttered and shook. Pulled over and it seemed to fix itself so I continued 23 miles to work. Was approx 39 degrees according to car dashboard. Leaving work 9 hours later, I drove approx 1.5 miles in stop and go traffic, speed no higher than 25-30 mph, crossed over rr tracks and the car shuttered and then shut off completely rolling to a stop. Threw on my hazards and the screen indicated I should put it in park and restart. The battery light and master indicator light came on. Car restarted and the lights disappeared. Went straight to Hyundai dealer. They attempted a 17 mile road test the next day after the car sat overnight and it did not repeat the issue. Nothing was stored in the computer system from when the lights came on. They have no explanation. Oil was changed and took car back at 5pm the day after the issue took place. Drove 24 miles to work today and it did not repeat yet.

The vehicle began making a knocking noise while driving up the mountain to big bear. No warning lights illuminated on the dash. Two days later while descending the mountain, the vehicle continued making the noise. No lights were illuminated on the dash. Then, while still on the mountain, there was a loud "pop", smoke could be seen in the rear view mirror, and the engine died; I coasted to the side of the road. The car behind me pulled over and the driver yelled that my car was on fire. Flames could be seen under the car. The fire spread and ultimately the car exploded, setting the hillside on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and the car was towed away.

On Dec, .21st, 2017 I entered a business parking lot at low speed as one would enter a parking lot and within a few feet turned right to enter an aisle between 2 rows of parked cars. At the second right I had my foot on the brake to slow but realized my car was not slowing, maybe even accelerating and then, horrified, realized my efforts to slow or stop were futile! I swerved to miss a person and fishtailed hitting a bumper of an unoccupied car. By then I was nearly T-bone to many cars on a busy street. Still not able to stop I made an abrupt turn to the right and was fortunate (yes, fortunate) to hit a retaining wall around business signs in order to stop the car. Thru these frantic very few seconds as I was trying to stop, my foot was on the brake, I couldn't pump it as one would expect to do and the vehicle seemed to be accelerating. My choice came down to hit many occupied cars on the street or turn and hit the retaining wall. Again, how fortunate it was there!! airbags didn't deploy; the car is a total loss. This is a very frightening experience. Could it be that other drivers of the Hyundai 2015 Sonata have not lived to tell what happened?

Sonata

  • 65,000 miles
My Sonata has started stalling and shutting down without warning. The first time it happed was Dec 12th. I just finished accelerating from about 35mph to 60mph. There the vehicle made a loud thump and the engine shut down. Seconds later I lost power steering, dash lights, and headlights. The car restarted without issue. The same problem happened on Dec. 16th while traveling at a constant 30mph. I experienced the same symptoms as before, except the vehicle did not shake or create a loud noise before shutting down. Mileage was at 75980. Temperature was in the 20's. I took the car do the dealership and they could not find anything wrong or recreate the problem. The third time this has happened was Dec 29th. I was traveling at 20mph and coasting to a stoplight. It was 19 deg outside and the mileage was around 76800. So far the car has not shut off when the weather is above freezing. Lower temps might be contributing to the problem but not likely to be the primary cause. In all cases the car was at operating temp and was running for more then 30 min. It has not yet shut off while accelerating. Only maintaining speed or coasting. About a two months ago the dealer did a software update on the vehicle due to a claimed recall. The issue started about 2-3 weeks later this is definitely a safety issue since it happens without warning. I did find some other complaints similar to this while searching.

I left harrisburg to drop 3 students to state college, driving for uber on 09/29/2017.around 9:30pm in lewiston in mifflin county, we came across a short turn.I got a kind of sudden small speed. We were out of the road. I tried to stop and put the car back on the road, too late. We hit a mountain and the car was lying on his right side.thanks god nobody got hurt; just chocked and some scratches.after reading the documents my insurance company sent to me, I realized there were a recall on my car for two problems.my car used to have this small speed sometimes I didn't know why. Hyundai motors sent me a email on October 26th to let me know about the recall; too late we already got crash. I want to say that my last inspection was at Hyundai but we didn't tell me about.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut down. The vehicle was restarted after a few minutes, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (advantage Hyundai, hickaville, New York) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The fuel pump was replaced, but the failure recurred ten days later. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not call the contact back. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 87,075.

I was driving at 6:20 am on the New Jersey turnpike. I was in the left lane and going approximately 70 mph using the scc (smart cruise control). All of the sudden, the lights start flashing and the car completely turns off. Since it was before sunrise, everything was black and I couldn't even see where I was driving, not to mention that the steering wheel became locked. 10 seconds later, the care came back to "life". it did that same intro with the "system check" thing as it does when the car is started from a park position- only I was on the highway going 70 mph. I have never heard of something so absurd, but I guarantee that if this was during rush hour or a busier time during the day- there would have been a major accident!

Put blinker on for right hand turn, made the turn, when the blinder stalk (which also contains headlight controls) returned to home position, the headlights went out, and the instrument panel indicated my lights had switched off. My light knob remained in auto, with the computer thought I turned them off. This was at night. I could not see when my lights turned off. It is very unsafe to be in motion and have your lights cut out!!! this problem happens frequently now, getting worse. It's obviously a bad connection within the blinker stalk, causing the light mode to change on its own when turning.

The safety system on my car more often then not warns of danger that does not exist, especially in direct sunlight at dawn and dusk. The cameras falsely warn of impending crashes or alerting you that you have swerved out of your lane even when you're dead center in your lane with no other cars around. Hyundai has no solution to the problem.

While stationary I noticed the car's engine sounded like it was ticking. I drove off about 35 miles per hour when my 2015 Hyundai Sonata limited stalled while driving. The car started shaking while attempting to speed up to keep the vehicle running. I had my passenger who witnessed the incident and we recorded using the cell phone to record the incident. The engine light came on then off again. Eventually it cut off completely. I had to restart and the speed of the vehicle would not go past 50 mph. The engine shook the entire car and sounded like the gears did not want to shift. The dealer was not able to replicate the issue or find any codes on their system. This same thing happen to my 2011 Sonata in which Hyundai refuse to pay in a class action lawsuit because I traded out of the vehicle a year after they replaced the engine. The engine also stalled while traveling at highway speed and started smelling like an electrical fire while smoke came from under the engine. I had to have it towed back to the dealership.

On three different occasions the dash flashed "check TPMS" meaning check air in the tires. On all 3 occasions the car would not go into gear.the next occasion the check TPMS came on so I put air in the tires and drove around the corner to reset the tire pressure monitor (computer). Upon coming around the corner to park the car the check TPMS warning came on again the car powered down and I coasted to park. The next morning I called the dealership to have the car checked I was told from jared that the technician did a software update and that " he thinks, maybe, might have fixed the problem. At this point I did not pick up the car because they could not guarantee the car had been fixed and that it will not die while driving around Hyundai service department said they were not sure because they could not duplicate the problem I had with the car. I left the car there contacted hyndai corporate where they opened a case #9327831.. they in turn had a fast team working on my car and they are not sure if the car is fixed or not because they could not duplicate the same problem. The have had my car for a month now still have not been able to find out what the problem is. I was told it does not fall under lemon law unless the car does the same thing again. But I do not know if the car is fixed 100% it only has 12,513 miles on it. Car would not go into drive the gear shift would not move to where I could drive the car.
