Our car has the SCC (Smart Cruise Control) system. When it's working it makes driving so much more enjoyable. We've had issues with it claiming a car is in front of us when there is no car and it warns us of an "imminent collision" and slams on the brakes. There's times when it doesn't see an actual vehicle in front of us and nearly rear-ends them. We've taken it to the dealership and they said they could not replicate the problem. That's understandable that they couldn't diagnose considering the cars SCC works well 80% of the time.
The cars computer finally recognized there was a problem one day and the warning message and lights indicated that there was a serious malfunction with the SCC and the car needed to be taken to the dealer (according to the owners manual). We wasted no time and took it to them the next day. This time we figured we had proof that it needed to be repaired. The Cruise control system would not operate since the computer indicated it was malfunctioning (you would think that it would allow a basic cruise function to still work and it would just shut off the SCC, but it doesn't). The dealer took it in and just reset the computer without fixing it. Now we still have the same problem of it not seeing cars that are present and seeing cars that don't exist. We will wait for the next time the system fails to bring it in.
I should mention that we are not idiots and we have read our owners manual from cover to cover. When we went into the dealer I knew more about how the system worked than their own service reps. I know that there are conditions when it won't operate properly. My issues have always occurred on flat, dry, straight, roads with no dirt on the car. See the picture of the radar dish and how clean it is. I would not have complained had the problems fallen into the expected issues that may occur under certain circumstances.
