The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the trunk failed to open as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the trunk latch needed to be replaced, and that the failure was related to an unknown recall. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.
The latch of the trunk will not release. There is no way to open the trunk because the latch itself has a defect as reported in the NHTSA report 21V619000 recall #208 for the 2016/2017 model year. There is no way to fold down back seats because the seat release is inside the trunk. The key, interior trunk release nor the key fob will release the trunk because there is a defect in the latch system. The NHTSA has already flagged this as an issue, but the years effected need to be expanded, as the recall was too narrow.
