My 2013 Hyundai Sonata with approximately 75000 miles recently experienced a front right strut spring break while the car had been sitting in my driveway for at least 3 weeks without being driven. The broken coil heavily damaged the the inside edge of the right front tire when I did drive it, which now requires me to replace the tire as well. It seems to me that a broken struct spring coil on a car that is lightly driven is a premature failure, which points to a weakness in the car's suspension design or a defective part.

Update from Jun 26, 2020: Hyundai issued a Technical Service Bulletin (#19-SS-002H), which extended the warranty coverage for my Sonata. Specifically, the warranty coverage for the front coil springs has been extended to 10 years from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This extension applies to 2012-2016 Elantra (MD/UD) and 2011-2014 Sonata (YFa). This isn't a recall like was done for the 2011 Sonatas, but it's not a bad option. My local dealer is honoring the extended warranty and is currently replacing both front coil springs and reimbursing me for the cost of the damaged tire. Complaint resolved.

Contacted the Hyundai dealer to get some information and was told there is a national back order on these springs. I asked is there a problem and is it covered by a recall or extended warranty and the answer was no. I then informed the representative that I had an extended bumper to bumper warranty and was told we have to fix it and submit it to see if it is covered. I believe there is a problem but it has not reached the level to be covered as a recall. The spring was completely rusted through and broke in two pieces.
