Two shops we took it to diagnosed as engine failed, replace engine... based on compression test, stethoscope to engine, etc. The car was being driven on a highway, when the noise started, lack of acceleration was felt, driver pulled off the highway, and drove slowly up to a nearby parking lot. We actually drove 12 miles on city streets to a mechanic shop we knew who gave the first diagnosis.
