I bought this car new, and I have had more than enough problems already. I only have 50,000 mile on my car. I am on my way to the shop today to get it checked out, hoping that it still under warranty with these miles. I'm being honest, I will not buy another Hyundai.

Wife took car for recall on trans axle after car was return notice a loud clicking noise in steering wheel. Took car to dealership informed this is a common problem. When question got a different answer "Well not very common just a few." RIGHT We all see what happen here. This is not a first time problem and Hyundai should step up to the plate!!! But as long they don't have to they want. This is a problem on there 2011 they recall it and they did not fix it why put the same plan in 2012.

I took my 21012 Sonata to the Mesquite Dealership, (16230 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, Mesquite, TX 75150) on October 3,2016 and was informed that the clicking noise when I turn my wheel needs a replacement of the coupling. John Pena Service Adviser told me the price would be about $400 because of the labor. I gathered from his explanation that there has been other customers coming in with the same complaint. I asked, what would happened if I didn't get it replaced? He said it could cause more damage and that the cost of the steering wheel will be about $2000. I then took it to a local mechanic to see what he would say and he informed me that he has had at least 12 Sonatas to come in with the same problem and he had told them to take it to the dealership because it may be a recall. This appears to be a defect and I agree with the others that we should not have to pay for it.

You would think if the dealer had so many customers with the same complaint, maybe they could send a report to the dealer.

steering column shakes when going over pumps and clicks

I pretty much copied some of another submission b/c the same thing is happening to me. My car has had a clicking noise when turning for a while now that the dealer said was not worth fixing. For the last two month now the steering wheel literally feels like it is going to fall off in my lap. The wheels starts to shake when I reach speed of 70 and it makes a knocking sound when i turn to left. The steering wheel also has slack and makes a knocking noise while stationary if you move it back and forth. My airbag light has also come on due to this same issue. I'm setting an appointment with the dealership for this Saturday that i'm dreading. I really think this needs to be a recall!!!!

Update from Nov 1, 2016: I ordered a Power Steering Column Noise Rubber Flex Coupler through ebay for a 2012 Sonata which was only $5. I have a friend that is good at working on cars. By following some videos on you tube he was able to get to the steering motor and replace the coupler. The rubbers piece was all the way gone. this should really be a recall and not be a rubber piece. This is a setup for the dealerships to get a quick $400 or up. FYI, i asked the guys that do my oils changes if they would do it and they were going to charge $400 too. So this is a known "stick it to the consumer" problem. Now my car is perfectly fine. I still need to get the alert light cleared out.

Update from May 12, 2017: FYI, I just got a letter in the mail for an extended warranty for 2011-2013 sontats with this (steering coupler) problem and problems with the clock spring.

II have a 2012 Sonata Ltd. with 28000 miles and have the "rattling" and clicking sound in my steering column as do many other people. If there is no recall, I am beginning to think class action lawsuit against Hyundai. This is my third Hyundai. I currently still own a 2001 Santa Fe and have had no problems. Bought a 2006 Sonata and had electrical problems.

This problem has progressively gotten worse over the last few weeks. My steering wheel sounds like it's going to fly off while driving. It makes this horrible knocking, clicking, noise not only when I drive over bumpy roads but whenever I drive on any road. The steering wheel also shakes really bad. I'm not sure how much this will cost to fix, but I'm sure its not going to be cheap. This seems like a SAFETY issue and Hyundai should really look into a recall for their steering column.

Started hearing a knocking noise in the steering column while turning. It has progressively gotten worse quite rapidly to the point where it does it as I drive down the road. It also seems like the car will walk all over the road while it is making this noise. I initially thought my tie rods had already worn out on the vehicle. I took it in to have the tie rods replaced to find out it is in my steering column. It seems as if a box in the steering column is loose or bad and I have been told I am going to lose the steering shaft if it doesn't get fixed. It is also believed that my airbag light has come on due to this same issue. It has caused a sensor in the steering wheel to go out. I called the dealer to see if there is any kind of recall for the steering on my car and they say they do not have anything. I have set up an appointment for them to look at it. So we will see what they say.

Update from Aug 18, 2016: So I talked to the dealer and apparently this is a known problem because he knew exactly what I was talking about and said it sounds like my steering coupler needs to be replaced. It is going to cost me at least $350 to replace it. I ask him since this is such a known problem and a safety issue why hasnt there been a recall.....His repsonse was he doesnt know.

This is the same problem of the coupler that has eroded. In the 2011, i have heard that there is a recall for this but for the 2012, I don't think there has been. From the way I understand it, it is a $10 part, but it take getting to which the dealer or a mech. will charge from high $300s to $700. There are video on how to repair, but the problem is getting all of the wires plugged back in right. Hyundai needs to step up to the plate and extend the recall to the 2012's as well. Symptoms, the steering is super loose rattles and is almost uncontrollable at high speed breaking, esp when traveling down hill. Someone is going to die from this, then they will issue the recall. They need to step up before it is too late.

I will never buy another Hyundai Sonata! I bought it brand new in 2011,traded in my Toyota Camry. Worst mistake I have ever done in my life. Nightmare!!! A lot of clicking and knocking in my steering wheel, and the dealership says I have to pay $300 to get it fixed. And, if I keep driving it the problem will get worst.

The dealer said it is the flexible rubber coupling in the MDPS that needs to be replaced. There is rattling when going over bumps or uneven roads and a click when moving the steering wheel, it feel s loose.

The dealer said it is not covered under warranty, it is covered only under 60,000!!! My car has the extended warranty (100,000 miles) as it was a certified used Hyundai vehicle and still won't cover it. The dealer said it will be $300 to fix if I do it now they have a $40.00 discount (what a joke).

I have been reading and for what the dealer told me about this (they have to keep ordering these parts as it happens a lot) it appears to be a common and known issue and to top it off the replacement is non-revised, so in another 40-75k miles it will start all over again!

The manufacturer should be responsible for the replacement!

I took my 2012 Sonata GLS to the dealer for a clicking sound coming from the front wheels. They determined that I needed the front left axle replaced. The work was completed and I was advised that the right front axle was wearing out and needed replacing. I still have the clicking sound.

I have an appt for the right front axle replacement on Monday. I purchased a third-party extended service warranty when I bought the car certified used from the dealer and that will cover the cost of the replacement.

I bought my car in Feb 2013 certified used from the dealer with 37k miles. I put 30k on it and I didn't expect to hear that I needed a new transmission (see previous complaint), and both axles replaced. Really?

When I took the car for a routine oil change, the tech pointed it out to me. Said that it was a huge problem with this model year. I asked if there was a recall and he said not yet. I don't understand why not. I asked if it was covered by warranty, and he said he did not know. In order for me to know whether it's covered by warranty, I have to make an appointment to have the issue fixed. This should be a recall because I consider it a "Factory defect", and I should not have to pay for it.
