CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Sonata has a seriously defective engine that seizes without warning. It was awarded the dubious honor of being the first CarTalk / CarComplaints Turd of the Week in late September 2015.
A class action lawsuit was filed in May 2015 against Hyundai that claims the 2.4L Sonata engine is defective. More info here.
I was driving my vehicle in Vancouver and the battery kept dying overnight. The vehicle died on me when I was driving it and I just jumped it and drove to Canadian Tire to get a new battery. That seemed to work until I got back to Albert and a check engine light came on. It was a code for an exhaust manifold pressure. Code was cleared and I was told it was probably nothing to worry about. The code did not come back on for a few months.
After getting the range switch replaced on October 17,2014 the engine like was on again and the reading said it was a manifold issue. So I went back for them to reset it so the light would go off and after driving five miles down the road I was mashing the gas pedal and it wasn't giving gas and the car just rolled, so I turned into an open parking lot. I switched the car off and restarted it, but the light was still on so now I have another possible expensive repair coming up. I wonder if they messed something up while doing the recalls because none of this was going on until after the recalls were done.
