The visor on both my 2006 and 2007 is broke and does not stay up. Had to glue it. Also we had an third 2007 with the same issue. This is certainly a safety hazard. The other day I almost got into an accident because I was blocking the sun with one hand and had the other on the steering wheel and had to swerve to avoid an accident and using only one hand almost had me in the other people wreck.

My Sonata 3.3L V-6 engine with what appears to be a very common and dangerous problem. This vehicle seems to begin stalling and slamming into 3rd gear fail safe mode, luckily I have not been rear-ended due to this yet! I have read up extensively on this and found many with the same complaint on www.carcomplaints.com website. It appears many dealerships are aware as they have had vehicle in to be problem solved with what appears to be an electrical problem more so than a mechanical problem. After having my car into 4 different shops including a dealership the first time it happened with no fix and only a 'if we can't replicate the problem we can't fix it' response I get mad. We have ruled out everything possible; transmission, engine, relays, etc. For 4 months it has been in and out of shops trying to diagnose the problem. Which is happening so often now it is not safe and I am having to take out a loan to try and buy a new care. I cannot trade this in due to the problem. When it is running it runs great, until it slams into 3rd gear with no warming and you loose all acceleration or it dies completely. You can shut it off and restart it and it runs as if nothing happened, until it stalls again. The last mechanic having verified everything he was told to check has determined it must be in the computer. Some individuals said early on they had the computers replaces (at a big cost) only to have it happen again. My car is 10 years old and only has 118,000 miles on it. I hate having to get rid of this car but there is no way it is safe to drive in this condition. Hyundai seems to be ignoring this complaint as no recall has been issued and no help in repairing the problem. Too many cars at the aprx mileage with the same problem and leads me to believe a recall is in order or financial reimbursement for the months of repair to fix it should be made. This Sonata had electric problems from the very beginning (climate control, light bulbs, brake lights, side mirror control, window control, cabin lights, etc.). most of the light bulbs have been replaced many times either by the dealer when it was still covered by warranty or by myself. The most recent round of replacement was on July 3 for the passenger side headlight, driver's side turn light (yellow) and rear left back off light. I finally started to question if the fuses were misplaced. After checking carefully the fuse types and labeled specifications of both the engine and cabin fuse panels, I found three fuses in the cabin panel were not the same as the owner's manual described. They are (wrong fuses in the parentheses): FS19 20A (25A), FS6 10A (15A), and FS5 25A (20A). I rearranged all three fuses according to the specification on the owner's manual (P. 6-41). Hyundai should be legally and financially responsible for these problems, which occurred during the assembly but led to countless frustrations and even safety problems when those lights were down frequently.

My driver's side sun visor broke and cannot stay up. I have to put it to the side, but it blocks side view dangerously. This is a common defect for Sonata 2006-2008. The technician at the dealership noticed the problem, but never mentioned to me during warranty. Many complaints have been reported to Hyundai www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=157121, but Hyundai simply ignores it.

Sonata 4-cyl

  • 115,000 miles
The safety labels on the visors have curled up and lost their adhesion to the visors making the labels unreadable. The vehicle was manufactured on 4/26/05. A NHTSA safety recall, campaign id no. 06V234000 was issued for this defect for vehicles built May 15, 2005 through August 2005. This recall was inadequate to include all affected vehicles. It should be expanded to include these earlier built vehicles.

Drivers side visor fails to stay in upright position and will fall to a position that can block the drivers visual field. This is apparently a common defect with this model of vehicle, but Hyundai fails to recognize the safety issue and will not repair or issue a recall.

When the brake was applied or excel pedal was not applied, all electricity function(radio, A/C, and headlight) went down for a second and came back again. It started happen when the vehicle marked over 100,000 miles and occurred frequently during driving. Even after changing battery and alternator which dealer pointed as reasons of the problem through whole electricity check-up, it happened again and again. The dealer couldn't point out the reason. I appear this problem here for serious potential accident possibility.

The sun visor of the drivers side recently fell and it won't stay up with the velcro stapled. It is very annoying and potentially dangerous while driving. It can obstruct my view and be distracting.

Dash board air bag light came on and remained on. Took to a mechanic who stated it was an error code that was not longer active. A sensor must have set it off, but there was no longer a problem. A few weeks later airbag light came on again. Took vehicle to Hyundai dealership who stated occupant classification system (OCS) or sensor that was part of system registered an error at some point in the past few days and that is why the light went on. They stated there was no longer an error, but that the sensor must be going bad and would need to be replaced before it failed. Reason being, once the sensor failed, the air bags (at least passenger air bag, potentially whole system shut off so driver as well?) wouldn't deploy in the case of an accident because system would shut off as a result of a sensor failure. Dealership stated that sensor could not be replaced individually, but that the whole passenger seat cushion would have to be replaced. The sensor is part of the OCS system. The quoted cost for the part (seat cushion with electronic sensing system) would be around $1500 total ($1350 for the part, $150 for the labor). As of now air bag light not on, sensor hasn't failed yet. Once it does, need to replace if want air bag system to deploy. This seems like a very serious safety issue that should be addressed by a recall. I have read hundreds of customer complaints online that have the 2006 Hyundai Sonata with this problem and haven't had it fixed. As a result there are a lot of people driving around in a vehicle that some if not all of the air bags won't deploy in (and most if not all of them don't realize it disables the air bag). This design flaw could result in serious injury or death. All information I received in regards to airbag light issue was from the service department at a Hyundai dealership. This issue needs to be investigated and a recall needs to be issued.
