We took our 2020 Hyundai Ioniq to the dealer for its 2nd oil change yesterday Oct28 2020. We agreed to a tire rotation while at the dealer. Only 7600 mi on the car. When we left 90 minutes later, husband driving, we immediately noticed a squeaking in the car and thinking it was from the car seat, he pulled over while still in the dealers' lot. He resumed driving after fidgeting with the seat and trying to figure out how a silent driving car suddenly sounded like a squeaky door. We are about 22 miles from dealer so we had some time to try to place the sound. We do have car sear covers on the front seats, he readjusted the seat, and by the time we got home we determined that the sound was coming from the steering wheel or steering column. The car was perfectly quiet prior to this 2nd visit to the dealer.

We called dealer and were told to return same day for them to look at it. So back we went 2 hours later. After an hour, service tech came and told us there were 2 things causing the noise. First he mentioned our floor mats...said they are "oversized" and were rubbing. We purchased and installed the floor mats when we got the car and they have never been a problem. Obviously, as the drivers of the car, if there was a problem with friction or rubbing or even interference with the pedals, we would have addressed it. Second, he told us that there is a problem with a worm gear in the steering column, he ordered one for our car and already had a bunch on backorder for other cars. Needless to say , we are not happy with them. So today, the day after our 88 mi total trip/ 4hours to the dealer, my husband got out and looked to discover that the floor mat had been physically moved to a different position thereby causing the "squeaky door" sound. Again, was perfectly quiet- no issue- till we left the dealer.

We can still feel a slight rubbing sensation which presumably is due to the worm gear, coincidentally not occurring either till this visit. There is a TSB out for this. There is also a slight vibration in the car but figure that may be a tire issue since tires were rotated but no re-balance was performed. Did racking the car contribute to the TSB steering sound? We don't know but are not happy with length of visit and the fact that our aftermarket products were fingered as one of the first problems but not corrected at the dealer. And our aftermarket seat cover was faulted for an occasional problem with an air bag light on the dash. That's another story and we figured out why that happened by ourselves and it was not caused by the seat cover. People buy and use seat covers. Don't think that is radical.
