At about 3:00 am on October 16, 2010, our 6-month old 2010 Elantra Touring caught fire in our driveway. I drove the car home from work earlier that evening and parked it in the driveway where it remained for nine hours until it caught fire. The car was totaled and about $6,000 worth of damage was done to our house, driveway and shrubs. A neighbor coming home from work called 911 and woke us up. The vehicle was towed immediately to a secure salvage lot.
GEICO and MetLife hired a forensic investigator who examined the car on 11/5 and determined that the source of the fire was electrical. GEICO determined the market value of the car and wrote a check to Chase Automotive. My wife and I signed a bill of sale transferring ownership to GEICO, and they secured the vehicle for 90 days in Fredericksburg VA.
GEICO’s investigator determined that the fire originated under the hood, and the car did not appear to be tampered with. Of course, Hyundai’s forensic expert determined that the cause of the fire could not be determined.
