Reported first incident to Capital Hyundai, St. John's, NL, Canada in May of 2009. It happened repeatedly where the vehicle would be put into park and as soon as your foot was off the brake the car would lurch forward, bucking, until you put your foot on the brake and turned it off. Dealer recommended using the hand brake. Dealer was in the process of building service bays to keep up with volume of work in region so we were put off and reduced to using a combination of the Brake, Park Gear, hand brake and turning off the car, until July. Using the hand brake did prevent the car from moving, however, it still wanted to go until turned off and key out of ignition. Kind of scary, and super dangerous - when you are not expecting it.
Experienced conflicting advice and information from Dealership, had to get Hyundai Canada involved to get action on maintenance - all documented with Hyundai Canada and Capital Motors. Dealership was finally able to take vehicle in and advised that a plastic part in the transmission was faulty and that it was cheaper to replace whole transmission than the part. Was kindly placed in a loaner vehicle for five months, awaiting the first transmission. 3000 km later we were back, with the same problem, looking for another transmission. Took out a similar loaner, which was at the 6000km mark, only to have to bring that back as it too needed a new transmission. Apparently, there was a backlog of vehicles awaiting new transmissions in North America.
Got the car back and it ran well for the next 8000km. Just as the 5 year lease was expiring the vehicle started to show symptoms of the same problem again. You must put on the hand brake before turning off vehicle, when parked on any sloping grade. We really enjoyed every other feature of the car, however, needless to say we did not buy out this car. We turned it back in pristine show room condition, and no doubt someone else bought the problem. We are glad we didn't. We did purchase a 2014 Santa Fe Sport. We have noticed that you must use the hand brake when parked on a grade to avoid uncomfortable lurching, when taking vehicle out of Park. Hopefully, this isn't a continuance of the last situation.
