On 8/3/18, I was at a stop light at ramp exiting off 202 highway, and "outta the blue" when I tried to turn left, the steering wheel locked and EPS light came on. It was near impossible to turn the wheel so I threw on my flasher to avoid being rear-ended. I scheduled appointment at Hyundai dealership as quickly as possible, on 8/6, and they performed diagnostics tests which pulled up codes relating to EPS light, malfunctions torque sensor, steering angle sensor, EPS failure, ECU failure. At low mileage of 32,485 miles, the dealer recommended I replace the entire steering column and EPS due to internal failure. Computer was unable to read torque to ECM. They stated car is unsafe to drive.
I promptly filed a complaint with Hyundai USA to assume responsibility to repair. In 2015, there was a recall for EPS module replacement/reset. Recalls that don't fix the problem means what?? Again, the dealer recommends replacing the entire steering column with a mere 12 month warranty on replacement part. With very low mileage, how can that be a recommend or responsibility at my cost? Hyundai USA has to be aware EPS module reset/replacement during recall did not fix the problem. Hyundai is now recalling 2018 Sonata and other models with same complaint and defect. Why are major steering malfunctions allowed to continue with Hyundai USA? Other than getting a case #, I'm waiting anxiously to hear from Hyundai Consumer Affairs for repair resolution.
