Purchased the vehicle as a Certified Pre-Owned from a local Hyundai dealership with just over 21K miles. Purchased a 36K service contract that covered all routine maintenance. The vehicle was serviced by the same dealership that it was purchased from until the motor failed at 104,331 miles.

Three oil changes ago (about 12K miles) we noticed that we were having to add 1/2 quart of oil between the 3,750 mile oil changes. Of course the dealership is not offering to fix the engine, since it went over the 100K by 4,331 miles.

Update from Jun 8, 2023: Hyundai originally issued a case on March 17, 2020 but did nothing to resolve the problem. Just got word of a class action lawsuit and settlement that extends powertrain warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles for engine failures and engine fires. Contacted Hyundai and issued a new case number. Hopefully they'll fix it this time around.

In 2019 it began using oil. I took it to Cool Springs Hyundai in Franklin Tn. The car was 3 yrs old and had approximately 60 to 65000 miles on it at that time. I was adding a qt of oil about every 1000 miles. They said the problem wasn’t bad enough to have fixed under the warranty. A few months later it got worse and I went thru the testing with them again. Hyundai Corp said no on the repair under warranty again.

Now my engine is dead 9/17/21 while out of state. Hyundai doesn’t even make a replacement engine and the mechanic could only find one used engine in the US. $5000 plus $2400 labor quoted is about the same as the cars value. To rebuild is more expensive. Other engines for sale online are made for Canada emissions. More expensive to convert for my car.

The mechanic says it is a piston gone bad. The mechanic bought it from me for $400.

This would not have happened if Hyundai had honored the warranty in 2019. I feel that Hyundai owes me approximately $7500 to replace my car.
