Apparently Hyundai only issued an “extended warranty” for their peeling paint issue which is how we were not aware of the issue when we purchased our car. There were no recalls listed for the car. Fortunately I took pictures of the peeling paint in October 2023 and when we went to the dealer in November ‘23 I thought the technician was joking when he asked if the car was under the extended warranty which had just expired on 10/31/23. I had no idea there was a huge problem with peeling paint. Hyundai covered the cost of the repairs on several sections of the car for our initial claim. Nice but we’re having paint issues now for the third time (they covered 100%.of second repair too). Hyundai came back to the dealer who initiated the claim with an offer last week to pay 1/2 of a $2300 repair of the new section that is peeling. I rejected that offer and went directly to Hyundai and am now waiting for the case manager to get back to me after a long conversation about how I have a $22k worthless investment. I told her to buy the car back from me and she offered $10k. Not going to cut it.

I want the car completely repainted which I’ve asked for each time we filed a claim. They will only repaint the section that is affected. I see cars with huge chunks of paint missing all over the car on a daily basis. The case manager told me they used a new primer and the pear white paint did not adhere to it. So she admitted it’s Hyundai’s problem that is now my problem. I don’t know how they’re getting away with not fixing the issue for all of the owners affected. I read that a class action lawsuit filed in CA failed due to a technicality. I haven’t investigated that any further. I’m in a few FB groups and have seen some owners contacted the BBB and were successful with their claims going that route. I will contact them on Thursday 1/2/25 which is when the Hyundai case manager told me she’d call me back. Fingers crossed that Hyundai will do the right thing!!

paint peeling

Third time is a charm - NOT!!! This is the third peeling paint claim with Hyundai. They paid 100% for the first two repairs. This time they’re only offering 50% of a $2300.00 paint repair. Ridiculous that Hyundai thinks the problem they created by using a new primer should become my problem. I told them I have a worthless $22K investment and that they should buy the car back from me. They offered $10K which doesn’t even cover what we owe. They need to give me the $22k I paid so I don’t lose the money for the payments I’ve already made. I”m calling the BBB tomorrow to see if I can get any backing from them. The Hyundai Corporate case manager is calling me back tomorrow. I want the entire car repainted including a new primer. I’ve been told it’s only the white pearl paint that didn’t adhere to the new primer but I want to be done with this once and for all.

Second incident of peeling/chunking paint issue wtih my 2018 Elantra. Fortunately Hyundai covered this repair at 100%. 2 months later another section has a huge chunk (I’ll add another complaint for this incident) and now Hyundai is only offering 50% payment of a $2300 estimate from the dealer where the other two repairs were made. I’m in negotiations with Hyundai Corporate over this offer which I rejected. The case manager is calling me back tomorrow 1/2/25. I spoke to her last week 12/27/24 and at least I got her to dig further into our case. Fingers crossed that she’ll do the right thing and pay 100% to repaint all the parts that haven’t been repainted yet on the car. I told the case manager that the extended warranty should not have an end date. There’s no way to know when the next chunk is going to bubble up and peel off. It’s ridiculous!!!

It was amazing to see a large section of paint chip off the hood of my car after a rainy day. Then a few days later the paint on the roof began to chip away, also in a large chunk. After doing some research I learned that a judge had thrown out a lawsuit because of a lack of evidence which is crazy because all you have to do is a quick search online and you will see thousands of Elantras with paint peeling (falling off) in the same spots. Then a friend of the family came over with her Elantra and low and behold, almost identical peeling. Coincidence? Obviously not!!

Please tell me there is some way to hold Hyundai accountable for this problem. Someone needs to initiate a new class action suit, it should be a slam dunk!!

Paint started flaking and peeling at different locations from fender area under the hood, around the headlights, the hood, around edge of front windshield, rear windshield, and numerous other body areas. It was dismissed as 'these are chips from rocks', yet the exposed primer has clearly no scratch or chips in it whatsoever. It's just white and the paint is gone. As the time has gone by, I now have LARGE sections of paint blowing off around rear window, and fender area by the trunk lid - and now I'm told they could and would fix it. However, I'm JUST magically outside the paint warranty and out of luck. Requested a PA / Goodwill and was denied. I cannot sell or trade this car in now due to the bad paint issues.

Hyundai knows they have a paint problem with the white pearl paint.

After 75 months (just over 3 years) the paint is peeling in large chunks.

Hyundai's answer from the CEO's office - too bad, too sad, sucker.
