ABS light kept coming on for no reason, which is very scary when one is driving. Took car to dealer and it took over a week for them to get to it and then they said that rodents had chewed my wiring and that they repaired it. I drove it that day and it happened the next day and took it back and again took days for service and was told they didn't find anything. It continued to happen, but after several weeks it stopped. It's coming on was random. I found out that the wiring harnesses on the car are made of a soy product that entices rodents.

Had the car worked on at a Hyundai dealer since I expected the issue (a/c not working) to be covered under the expensive bumper-to-bumper warranty I had been talked into by them... it wasn't, and the solder job (quick and easy, wires were right on top) cost $388. Now I learn that this is likely going to be a recurring problem due to their terrible decision to wrap their wires in soy. Will research the anti-rodent tape suggested here... in the meantime, let's force them to include this under their warranty?

rodents chew soy based wire covering

I purchased my 2016 Hyundai Elantra just last year. I had my car parked for one day, went to drive it and the engine light came on....sounded awful...pulled the car back in the drive and popped the hood, and upon removing the cover that goes over the engine noticed that the wires had been chewed through by a pack rat. I have since been online to find out that several car makers were going "green" and use a soy based coating in most of the newer model of cars. This is apparently appealing to mice, squirrels and other such vermin. So here is my gripe...why is this not covered under the warranty seeing that Hyundai put a product in the cars knowing that it would attract small animals to snack on it? And, if there have been previous law-suits, then why has Hyundai supplied a part number for Rodent tape to prevent the problem and it is NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY?? The harness costs $2000...I am a single parent (how the heck am I supposed to come up with that?)

Harness: $2000

Rodent Tape: Honda Rodent Tape (4019-2317) $32

Since Hyundai knows of this issue and other car manufactures (Honda) have class action lawsuits regarding this same problem and this is NOT excluded from the warranty it should be fixed for FREE!
