CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

I have a 2013 Hyundai elantra GT, and when I hit the slightest bump in the road it goes all over the road, its very scarier experience. When it happens on the freeway its hard to keep my car in my lane. I'm so afraid that one day I'm going to loose control of the steering and have a bad accident. I'm good to see that someone else is having the same issue with their hyundai. There are too many issues regarding this make and model. Hyundai, you guys need to do a better job of addressing these issues and making things right with the customers.

Another complaint to add to my growing list. Brought my car in for a routine oil change and the mechanic said that my front end was swaying like a boat! The front links would need to be replaced within a few months. Fast forward to September when my brakes started acting up; brought the car in and had both the front brakes and the sway bar links replaced. Over $400.00 on a vehicle with less than 35,000 miles (not to mention the number of tires I've had to replace - 6). I don't think that I'll buy another Hyundai....

After the "OMG THIS NEW CAR IS NEW" feeling left my brain, I began to notice the car jumps around on bumps and floats down the road. but not in a good way like a 1980's Towncar does. but in the bad, lack of control at high speed kinda way. While the front end seems fine and handles well. Its the rear end that seems detached from the rest of the car. Doing what it wants no matter what the front tires are doing.

This is 100% the fault of Hyundai and their choice of going with a axle in the rear. Yes you hear that right. The rear end has a good Old Axle. which links the 2 rear tires together for no other reason that "its cheap". This causes the car to act "loose", unresponsive and dangerously unpredictable on anything less then perfect road. It also causes the car to jostle the occupants around like a 5 year old trying to get the last ice cube from his cup when you encounter uneven pavement like a pot hole or off angled driveway.

What year is it? The ONLY reason the rear end should have an axle is if its a truck that hauls things or a car that's for drag racing. I can't think of any common sense reason why a FWD car should have one.

Multi link, McPherson Strut and Double wishbone, ect... all MUCH better choices and those are the cheaper choices. Again this just goes to show how cheap the car really is. those extra features? Heated seats, Auto Lights and Homelink Mirrors on all new 2013's?

The car jumps all over the road with a little bump in the road. The wind blows it feels you are on high seas. I can't believe Hyundai put out a car like this. I do own another Hyundai product, had no issues like this Elantra. Specially being a new car I had only for a few weeks now.

The car wanders out of control in windy winter conditions. It feels much like hydroplaning, but with all 4 tires. I have been back to the dealership a number of times and have been told anything from shifting the load around in the car, the alignment is out etc. The dealership had the car for 2 weeks in February where they replaced the right steering knuckle.

The same winter conditions didn't occur until March 13 when I was on my way to work. The car went out of control on the 401 highway (major highway in Canada). I managed to get it off the road, then eased it to the next exit and went back to the dealership. Any time I had been back to the dealership, the issue hadn't been replicated by the mechanic. This day I went with the mechanic, and it was replicated. I thought the mechanic's jaw was going to hit his lap when it finally happened for him. He looked at me and said that he had never experienced anything like that before. I did put snow tires on this vehicle that I purchased used and I informed the dealership of this. The mechanic said that he would return to the dealership and put on a set of their snow tires and rims. He did this and the car exhibited the same issues when the mechanic took it back out. Therefore the issue is not with my tires.

He then took one of the dealership's Elantra GT's out and this one did the exactly same thing. The dealership told me that they informed Hyundai about this and were waiting to hear back from Hyundai on how to proceed. They then handed me my keys and said they would be in touch. I said no, this car is not safe and it hasn't been repaired. I need a loaner car. They said they didn't have one, long story short, after speaking to the owner of the dealership. they managed to find one. I am now driving a loaner car and waiting to hear back from them. I did call the customer relations number on March 13th 2014 and was told that Hyundai had not heard of this issue with this car. I find that difficult to understand as I had reported the issue myself on December 30 2013. There is an issue with this model of car. I can't and won't believe that the only 2 of these cars that exhibit this behavior ended up at the same dealership.

When road is a little icy or windy outside, car sways side to side almost making me feel sea sick. I think it is because the car is so light. Other cars are zooming past me at speeds I should be able to do but I have to go about 45 on highway not to sway like that. Very dangerous, feel like I am going to spin out at times.

At normal driving speeds, (above approximately 25 MPH) if a curve is encountered with rough or bumpy surface, the rear end of the car skitters out from the turn. This issue becomes more pronounced the higher the speed, the tighter the turn and/or the rougher the road. The car is virtually useless for highway-speed commuting here in NJ with the typical narrow lanes and bumpy surfaces.

We brought this to the dealer service dept, who concurred with the issue, but noted that there are no TSB's or recalls related to it. They said that the light weight is a factor, along with the lack of a spare, but even with quite a bit of weight added to the trunk, there is still a problem.

We then contacted the Mfr, who finally responded saying that this is not a known/recurring problem to them and there is nothing they can do.

We've loved our prior Hyundai's, but this Elantra model is very disappointing and unsafe. Will probably escalate to a consumer protection agency.

This car is extremely unsafe to operate at highway speeds. The car sways and looses traction on the rear-end when driving over uneven pavement or when encountering a pothole and the car literally looses traction and changes it's direction with little effort when that happens This is a very dangerous vehicle, indeed.

The vehicle needs an anti-sway mechanism. The vehicle is too light in the rear.

If Hyundai doesn't step up and take responsibility for these complaints, then it's Lemon Law time.

Further, why hasn't the NHSA looked at this or advised consumers??? Duh! Yes, I will be reporting this.
