CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that a part fractured within the rack and pinion which caused the steering wheel not to function while the vehicle was in motion. The contact was unable to steer left and right due to the failure. The dealer diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15V100000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

If I hit any bump in the road while driving my vehicle fishtails causing the vehicle to steer into the next lane. I do no know what is causing the vehicle to fishtail. I believe that one day this can cause an accident and put myself and others at risk of hitting each other.

The ESC indicator/traction control activated while I was driving 50 mph. I lost complete control of the vehicle, the car headed straight for a cement guardrail on a bridge. The car decelerated, I was unable to steer and the tires screeched on the ground. I was able to push the ESC off button and recover control of the car, avoiding the crash. I knew about the off button only because we have had this problem since June and Hyundai was unable to fix it because it did not duplicate for them. Previously we were driving at a very slow rate of speed, this time it almost killed my daughter and me! my car has been with Hyundai auto-nation, columbus, ga since August 24, 2016 I called on August 25 but the car VIN # was not asked of me, the complaint ticket number is 1010763 the first time the ESC activated my husband was driving. The ESC turned on, while he was accelerating onto an on-ramp back in June 2016. We turned the car off, researched it on the side of the road, found the "off" button and brought to Hyundai the next day and they were unable to fix the problem! a week later the ESC turned on in a parking lot while I was driving, hit the ESC off button and the car behaved until Aug 24th. I called Hyundai to report, but since it didn't occur again, they said do not bring it in. On August 24th, the ESC came on while I was in a school zone, I hit the off button, I took the off button off, to see if it would activate again so I could bring it into Hyundai (they said it had to be malfunctioning at the time of visit to be fixed) it malfunctioned! almost killing my myself and my daughter! if I hadn't known about the ESC off button, I would definitely have crashed!

Over a period of 1-2 days, vehicle steering became " more heavy" - in other words -- more resistance in the steering --- it required a little more effort to turn the steering wheel. Hyundai dealership indicated the vehicle needed a wheel alignment. The condition still exists

Takata recall. My complaints involves the steering and brakes. When in motion and apply pressure to steering either direction nothing happens. Its very sticky. Apply more pressure and it over steers. His to the point that it is extremely aggravating and dangerous. When in motion the brakes chatter terribly. Even worse in rainy conditions. Vibrates the whole car. I found that Hyundai is well aware of these problems. Why haven't they corrected these problems " are they simply using their buyers as guinea pigs " or do they even care about the quality of their product. This is the second time I've made these complaints and as of now, still no response. Wasted my hard earned money for sure as well as my time. Thanks.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While driving at various high speeds, the steering wheel became inoperable which resulted in the vehicle swerving without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

There are several issues with this vehicle 1. steering- the electric steering makes this vehicle hard to maintain a straight line on the freeway. The auto steering or self correcting steering is dangerous and should have an off switch. 2.traction control- the traction control is dangerous in ice, snow and rain. It has the opposite effect in these conditions, it would safer and would have more control if it is simply turned off. 3. stalling- the vehicle stalls very easy, but I believe it due to saving gas at idle with lower RPM. (manual transmission) requires more gas when starting from a stop than any vehicle I've have owned. 4. tps- tire pressure sensor never works always says there is an issue even after replacing sensors. These problems are constant since purchase!

Is has been 2 years now since I have owned the 2013 Hyundai Elantra. I have brought the vehicle in the dealer approximately 15 times for suspension and steering problems. The vehicle handles poorly on pretty much any road condition. The vehicle will sway and jump over every bump or crack in the road. It is very difficult to keep the vehicle straight in a lane and feel you have to constantly correct the steering wheel. I have to whitenuckle the steering wheel to keep control of the vehicle. The suspension has been clunky since day one and the dealership finds nothing wrong! there are numerous complaints of the same issues. Hyundai needs to step it up and protect the owners of these vehicles before something tragic happens!

While driving my car on uneven roadways the rear of the car likes to fish tail..ie pot holes, rough roads etc.. the front of the car always wants to sway back and forth on any type to road surface as it fells like the car is not connected to the road. Windy days are even worst and passing semi's is just as bad. You consistently have to fight with the steering wheel and it seems to be a unsafe car. We need a recall to solve this problem...also my steering wheel is making a knocking sound and pops when turning and it happens all day long

I own a Hyundai 2013 Elantra and I have had several issues with this car. The car has several times refused to start and the break pad gets stuck and I can't move the car out of park. I've had to call the tow truck several times and the only way to make the car start again is to manually shift it into neutral. This is a huge safety hazard, the car almost ran over me, once when I didnt apply the emergency break on when the person was manually putting the car in neutral!!!! additionally, the car shakes. I took it in to the dealership and because it was still under warranty they inspected it. Once I came back they said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle, and that the shaking was due to the power of the motor, that I needed to get use to it!! I've had to also replace my tires because they seem to wear off, and I can't drive the vehicle over anything without swerving. I've had the car aligned and my car still swerves/pulls to the left! there needs to be a recall on this car!! I cant get my car fixed because the dealership cant find anything wrong with it! I am now stuck making car payments to a lemon car! I've had two accidents on this car already one I reported to the my insurance and they were able to fix it. There was a tire on the highway and I was too scare to swirve the car to avoid it because I know the car cant handle something like that. So I had to get the impact of it. Please recall this car!

Rear of the vehicle tends to fishtail or sway at speeds above 40 mph while operating on snow covered roads, during rainy road conditions, when the vehicle travels uneven pavement such a steel bridge deck joints. I checked and there were approximately 20 simliar complaints in the first 80 complaints that I looked at. So 25% percent of the first 80 complaints that I looked at for against this car are similar in nature. These condition is very dangerous and should be addressed. I called the dealership and he declined to say there are any known issues as described. I just mounted my winter tires and was made aware of severe wear as if only 1/3 of tire is actually in contact with the road surface. If this is the case, that would explain why the car is unstable in poor weather conditions. I just had the alignment checked and it was fine. The poor design of the rear end as far as tracking goes could explain why tires are wearing out prematurely and why the vehicles fishtail. Listed below are similar complaints: NHTSA id number 10785827 10782948 10782179 10777921 10776596 10749640 10748705 10726713 10722309 10721075 10716682 10713795 10712467 10706333 10704445 10695023 10694257 10691288 10680416

The first time I took the car on the open road, 3 days after I purchased the car, is when I noticed the problem. The Elantra feels like it's wants to fishtail every time I drive over a small pothole or slightly uneven pavement. I would only be traveling around 65 mph, so I wasn't going very fast. Also, any little cross breeze (12-15 mph) will cause the car to swerve all over the place, to the point that I have to get off the highway and take the access roads. There is something very wrong with this suspension and something must be done to resolve the problem before someone gets killed, if it hasn't happened already.

I just purchased this car about a month ago. I noticed much like numerous complaints similar to mine that when I hit bumps or potholes or uneven roads, it seems to sway. Almost feels like you are losing control. I am starting to think this might be a major issue and might result in serious injury or death. Which in turn may result in major lawsuits. If I were the NHTSA I would seriously open a investigation! now! do it now please before people get killed!

First incident happened in April of 2014. Pulling out of my driveway the power steering went out. Called the dealership, made an appointment for the following week to bring my car in and it had only happened once at low speeds. Power steering went out 2 more times during the day, called the dealership back and informed them I was bringing my car in at that moment as I felt unsafe. On my way to the dealership driving down the highway, the power steering gave out on me while exiting the highway going 75 mph. I was able to get off and luckily the dealership was right off the exit. The eps light was on and it threw a code. They told me my steering column was bad. They replaced it and all was fine. Then I had an issue with my factory installed remote start a few months later. They told me a circuit was blown and it had to be replaced. Now this year (may of 2015) I have had the remote start and the power steering go out on me once again. My car is in the shop, was told I needed steering column replaced again. I refused this answer, and they are digging deeper and have figured out there is an electrical problem with my car. I have had a loaner car for 4 days and they still are no closer to figuring out what is wrong.

While driving the steering will have a slight lock to it that will be unlocked by over-correcting the wheel. This problem has been present since the purchase of the vehicle in March and was looked at by Hyundai who said that there was no problem and that what we were feeling was common in an electronic steering system. In our ignorance we accepted their diagnosis but the problem has become worse since then, on 5/23/15 as I was driving the problem was so bad that it felt as if the wheel had locked up entirely and was pointed in the direction of the ditch, I corrected the problem but had to use more force than any previous time and in doing so the car jerked into the opposite lane, had a vehicle been in the opposite lane I would have hit them head on. The vehicle has not had as hard of a lockup since then however we have not gone over 55 since then either. In the city at lower speeds of 25-45 you can still feel it locking up at times however it is much more easily corrected. The problem still persists at any speed and distance, but on 5/23 was the worst incident yet and I expect that it will get worse until it is properly corrected. Hyundai though says that there is no problem and its all part of the normal operations of an electronic steering system, I however am not convinced. Thank you for your time.
