CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.
Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.
Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.
The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

My engine started making ticking noises and my oil prsssure light came on. Was told I needed a new engine at $6700! I see hundreds of similar complaints. There's only 58000 miles on my car
My engine started making ticking noises around 75000, took car in for 75000 mile maintenance and asked service department to check for noise and car acceleration problems. Tech later told me its normal and nothing they can find wrong with car. Now I see from looking on the internet its a common problem but now my car is out of warranty. I also went in before my warranty ended to have the 100000 mile maintenance service and complained about the same issue, they still said it normal. Today I just contact my local Hyundai service department to see what options I have.
While engaging in nirmal drive, engine (app.75K miles) starting knocking. Firestone refused to work on defective engine and stated that oil was dirty even though recently changed shortly after regular 3K oil change. Took to different mechanic who said there is piston deterioration/ damage along with lifter damage. Engine needs to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While driving 30 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The contact pulled the vehicle over and had it towed to key auto center of somersworth (221 nh-108, somersworth, nh 03878) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 130,000.
My engine recently developed a loud ticking noise at 78,000 miles. I took it into my local Hyundai dealer and they informed me that I needed a new engine and advice me not to drive the car because the engine could seize up. The noise lasted no longer than a week before I took it in. The car was also regularly serviced and I have receipts. The dealership found metal debris in the oil pan but could not diagnose the exact issue without completely disassembling the engine. When looking online, this problem pops up hundreds of times for this make and model of car but Hyundai has never issued a recall.
Engine stalled on me. Every time I press the gas pedal it jerks. Sometimes when I start the car it won't start. Also if it takes a while to start it will stall the whole time while driving. I can press on the gas pedal but it will drive like 1 mile per minute. I can hear the engine roaring, but it just won't move. I took it in to Hyundai they fixed it, but now my car is starting it again. I recently got on the freeway and right when I pressed the gas peddle it jerked and the engine light came on. Now it's starting to do the same thing taking a while to start, and stalling out of nowhere. I can also hear almost like a knock and the gears shifting when I'm driving, when I stop and go I can hear everything. I'm afraid to go anywhere far in my car because I never know what's going to happen. I think this engine need to be assessed because this is not normal at all.

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While driving various speeds, a ticking noise was heard under the hood. The noise grew louder when the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was taken to jeff wyler Hyundai (located at 1501 hillcrest ave, springfield, oh 45504, (937) 325-4601) where it was diagnosed that the pistons failed and metal shavings were in the oil. Started hearing a ticking noise in the engine once it turned cold. Would hear the noise when I started up the car from a stationary position and noise would accelerate as I pressed on the gas and decrease as I slowed down. Took to a Hyundai dealership and was told that there were metal shavings probably from the rod bearings in the engine. Told I would need a new engine and provided a cost of $8,000.
A knocking noise from the engine that increases in frequency as the engine RPM increases. Reduced power and/or hesitation and vibration. In motion the knocking comes from the engine and when stopped it hesitation and vibrate
My 2013 Elantra sedan built in Alabama on June 14, 2013, and equipped with a 1.8L engine. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership because it cut off on me while driving in the middle of a canyon, in traffic. The brakes did not work. The cars steering locked up and could not control the car more than to veer it off the road with the forward momentum from coming down a hill. I was told the engine needed to be replaced due to the oil level being too low. I had just had it replaced and checked about a week before. Then I was told it was a connecting rod that had broken. I've left the car at the dealership at the moment because I feel like this is a manufacturing defect and will not pay out of pocket for a repair that would be covered in Canada.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle unintentionally accelerated and the engine revved while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was taken to murdock Hyundai murray (4646 state St, murray, ut 84107, (801) 262-6401) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving on beltway doing 55 mph the vehicle won't accelerate and also makes sounds when pushing on gas the RPM will be moving back and front even when car not moving. Car smells like something is burning. The car will start to slow down and shut it self off.all lights will turn on then I shut car off completely then turn back on and it starts up like nothing happened this has happened multiple times. Then when sitting still at a light the car shut off.
We bought the car used in 2017 from dealership. One month after purchase and less than 1000 miles after purchase, and less than 64000 miles total, the engine needed to be replaced due to oil issues with the cylinders. Adequate oil was in car and dealer insisted that all checks had been performed prior to sale. I have recently read about recalls for other Kia and Hyundai vehicles due to engine failure problems for the same reason. I am reporting this issue in hope that this Agency will consider investigating to see if the recall should be extended to Hyundai Elantras. This issue appears to be repeating among other vehicles made by hyandai in the same time frame my car was manufactured. I am also concerned about the repair that was performed because now there are additional recalls by Hyundai and Kia for the engine repairs that were performed on the other recalled models. The dealership and Hyundai did cover most of cost of engine replacement but I want to be sure the repair was safely done. There are reports of engine fires related to high pressure fuel pipes and fuel leaks.
Intermittent engine light illumination. Happens only after the "vehicle check in progress". car has started to run rough both while accelerating and at a stop. Acts like it will shut off. Having to put the car in neutral and pat the gas to keep it running. There is a tsb for this issue but no active recall. Constant run around at the service centers. They say its normal for it to run rough. Also the rubber steering coupler went bad. Was making a thud noise when steering wheel was turned. Also a tsb for this....no recall. But wait theres more! the clock spring is also bad! tsb for this too! bad clock spring results in the loss of power to the buttons on the right side of the steering wheel. When I replaced the steering coupling, I forgot to plug in a wiring harness under the wheel and the buttons started working again but had no power steering. Plugged the harness back in and had steering but the buttons no longer worked. Pretty sure Hyundai is uploading error codes and giving people the run around in an attempt to get more money. Recall this crap already before something bad happens. Hold this company responsible for selling crap to people.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. The contact heard an abnormal tapping sound coming from the engine. Occasionally, the engine revved and would seize momentarily before the contact could drive off. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 128,000.
Vehicle's engine making a tapping noise from under hood on passenger side when engine was started. Noise increased with acceleration. Vehicle was taken to a certified master mechanic. Mechanic was able to duplicate concern. Vehicle has only 78096 miles. Master mechanic determined the vehicle needs new engine and recognized that this issue should not occur on a vehicle with such low mileage. Mechanic recommended that vehicle be taken to Hyundai dealership to have them replace engine under major concern of safety issues : vehicle stalling. Hyundai dealership has vehicle but as of date has not answered to replacing defective engine under a warranty.
