Brakes Make Grinding Noise
2013 Hyundai Elantra (Page 2 of 3)
This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Hyundai dealer.
CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.
Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.
Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.
The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

My 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS with the preferred package had grinding brakes when going down hills since I purchased it bran spakin' new in Sept 2012 for more than $18,000. The grinding noise would occur sporadically and usually happened when the car was ALMOST at a complete stop going down hills on dry, even surfaces. I just thought it was the ABS until I had a friend in my car and it happened again and he said I should have it looked at. Duh. Glad I did.
The mechanics CLAIMED found no signs of premature wear or anything that would hinder performance of the brakes. Of course! No problem at all, BUT they did acknowledge one problem, a Technical Service Bulletin. The dealership knew all too well about this problem and said there was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 13-01-010) that there was an "updated brake pad (GREEN) (huh? green?) that is more efficient for dampening noise and vibrations " :/
It is almost like Hyundai is saying to it's customers,"Oh, you are having a problem with your brakes? Okay, now we will give you the REAL brake pads that will actually stop your car. Sorry for not giving you REAL brakes that actually WORK to STOP the car when your bought it bran new". My car only has 18,400 miles on it. They needed to turn the rotors to install the new, improved, quiet, "green" brake pads. This is annoying because now the rotors will have a shorter life.
Also annoying because one of the reasons why I chose the Elantra over the Honda Civic was because it had better disc brakes and not the standard drums on the Civic. Thank goodness I at least have heated seats to keep my sorry butt from getting too cold and keep me relaxed enough to stop thinking about being able to stop on time before hitting a dog, kid or other random obstacle which may get in my way. Have yet to see if these new, "green" brake pads fix the problem. I didn't have to pay because it was under warranty. Regardless, this is a MAJOR safety issue that should of been recalled on all 2013 Hyundai Elantras. I think Hyundai needs a few more years to bake in the oven before making more cars.
