CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

My 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS with the preferred package had grinding brakes when going down hills since I purchased it bran spakin' new in Sept 2012 for more than $18,000. The grinding noise would occur sporadically and usually happened when the car was ALMOST at a complete stop going down hills on dry, even surfaces. I just thought it was the ABS until I had a friend in my car and it happened again and he said I should have it looked at. Duh. Glad I did.

The mechanics CLAIMED found no signs of premature wear or anything that would hinder performance of the brakes. Of course! No problem at all, BUT they did acknowledge one problem, a Technical Service Bulletin. The dealership knew all too well about this problem and said there was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 13-01-010) that there was an "updated brake pad (GREEN) (huh? green?) that is more efficient for dampening noise and vibrations " :/

It is almost like Hyundai is saying to it's customers,"Oh, you are having a problem with your brakes? Okay, now we will give you the REAL brake pads that will actually stop your car. Sorry for not giving you REAL brakes that actually WORK to STOP the car when your bought it bran new". My car only has 18,400 miles on it. They needed to turn the rotors to install the new, improved, quiet, "green" brake pads. This is annoying because now the rotors will have a shorter life.

Also annoying because one of the reasons why I chose the Elantra over the Honda Civic was because it had better disc brakes and not the standard drums on the Civic. Thank goodness I at least have heated seats to keep my sorry butt from getting too cold and keep me relaxed enough to stop thinking about being able to stop on time before hitting a dog, kid or other random obstacle which may get in my way. Have yet to see if these new, "green" brake pads fix the problem. I didn't have to pay because it was under warranty. Regardless, this is a MAJOR safety issue that should of been recalled on all 2013 Hyundai Elantras. I think Hyundai needs a few more years to bake in the oven before making more cars.

There was a grinding noise with the car but nothing big. This car is driven 99% of the time on the highway so the brakes are rarely used. My wife took the car in for regular service and they convinced her that a whole brake cleanup/rotation was needed costing $200.00 Needless to say, 11 months later, it's doing the same thing all over again. This is the first Hyundai I've bought, and it will be the last. You get what you pay for.

brakes make grinding noise brakes make grinding noise

Purchased 2013 Elantra in Oct. 2013. Contacted dealer by phone in Jan. 2014 (approx. 2500 miles) and mentioned the grinding of the brakes on the car. I was told "this is a characteristic of this model and nothing was wrong!" Called again in August of 2014 (approx. 15,500 miles) and complained again and was told the same thing. It finally got to the point where I hated to apply the brakes.

Out of desperation I purchased after market Pads ( Wagner QC1595 ) and installed them on the car. Ninety percent of the noise disappeared immediately! I contacted Hyundai and requested reimbursement for the cost of the pads and also replacement of the rotors that were likely damaged by the incorrect pad material installed at the factory. They sent me to a local dealer for a "brake inspection" to insure the car was safe. The local deal informed me the brake system comes with a 12,000 mile warranty and I would need to pay $99.00 for the "look at." They did admit they have been changing front brake parts for the same issues on this vehicle but my car now had 17,700 miles on it and was not under warranty anymore. The fact that I have been complaining since the car was only 4 months old and 2,500 miles does not count in the Hyundai world.

This problem is well documented on the Internet and Hyundai should step up to the plate and offer replacement rotors and pads to loyal customers who experience this problem. As a side note, I brought the removed pads to the dealer for inspection and they noted on the work order "Customer provided pads viewed by adviser, barely worn." The original pads had little wear on them, a sure sign of incorrect material matching between the rotors and pads.

Elantra GT GLS 1.8

My new 2013 Elantra GT GLS (9000KM) developed a grinding/grabbing noise when stopping---at first applying a little pressure to the peddle, later the noise was intermittent, sometimes happening all the time while driving, other times when coasting to a slow stop-worse (very loud) when stopping at the foot of a small hill at an intersection. Passengers in my car have said "what's wrong with you car".

I took in to the local dealer, they did a brake service N/C----noise came back after a week. Initially they said they would replace the pads if it re-occurred.Service manager refused, said it was just characteristic of the car..."the brakes are safe, the noise is just annoying". Called Hyundai Canada, they told me to take it to another dealer, same diagnosis - brakes are working and safe. I mentioned the service bulletin in the US----I was told unless Canada issues a service bulletin there is nothing they can do. I was told parts are different in the US anyway.

Hyundai Canada says that they have had no other complaints about this 'grinding noise'. Tried to speak to a supervisor and was refused.

Noise was getting worse-now April 21, 2014. I called the service manager he said to bring it in. Hyundai Canada said I would be charged if they found nothing wrong. My appointment is tomorrow 4-22-14.

However I was driving by the dealership yesterday and stopped by because the noise was consistent. Took the service manager for a ride-he heard the noise...he said that "he would see what he could do". I would like the entire braking system replaced---rotors, pads, discs-no more cleaning and turning rotors...Service Manager-still maintains it is characteristic of this model. Ceramic and metal pads.

I'll see what they come up with tomorrow...

Update from Apr 25, 2014: Dealership replaced the break pads as a good-will gesture...so far no continuous grinding-with light breaking...although a very slight grabbing when I applied more pressure.

Started having problems with the brakes clunking at about 15k miles during medium braking. It sounds like a metal on metal rumbling noise coming from the front brakes. Took it in at 20k miles and had them look at it and they resurfaced the rotors and put in new front brake pads. The fix lasted for about 2 months and the problem slowly returned. Now at 33k miles the problem has returned louder than ever. Took it in again the other day and they cleaned the brake pads and greased the pad backing. They also said that there is a service bulletin that alerted them to tightening an axle nut on the front driver side that was loose. They said the factory had a defective way of locking the tightened nut when built and that the nut needed to be torqued tighter. The service tech guaranteed that this would fix the noise problem for good. We'll see.........

The day I purchased the vehicle I noticed the grinding noise in the brakes when I drove the vehicle off the lot....not knowing any better I figured it was just one of those "new car things" but the grinding noise got worse. When coming to stop the vehicle makes a grinding sound but also a creaking sound from the weight of the vehicle rocking forward. I took the vehicle in and they said they refiled the rotors and replaced the brake pads July 2013----here it is January 2014 and it's doing the same thing again...

I have had the car to the Hyundai dealership many, many times in the first year and it has yet to get fixed. They have replaced rotors and pads and it still has a terrible creaking and grinding noise. You can feel it through the frame of the car. People who drive with me say "What is that terrible noise". If you drive in stop-and-go traffic where you have to feather the brakes sometimes it will do a horrible oscillating and several times the front end shakes. I have contacted Hyundai directly several times and they seem to not care and keep telling me to bring it to the dealership but it never gets fixed. I have wasted so much time and expense bringing it in I will never buy another Hyundai. I was told it falls under our state's lemon law and I will have to now purse that avenue as I don't think it is safe, clearly it is damaging the car and no one would ever want to buy it nor would I want to offload such a problem to anyone else. Hyundai has completely failed to resolve this and I would tell everyone to never buy a car from them. Our family has bought several Hyundai's over the years but will never again, our next car will be a Honda! Hyundai has completely failed this time! In addition the navigation system and hands free phone has never worked right and we have had it in several times for that too.

I hear noise from the brakes but not really loud @ 5,500 miles . At 6,000 miles the grinding noise was too great to ignore and it only happens above 40mph and up when braking.Went to dealer and they said the rotors had some pitting and heat spots and will replace front rotors and would not replace the pads which were ok . I,am 90% sure that they ascertain this with out pulling the wheel, so the mechanic just looked at the rotors inboard side which has a shield. The out board side was fine. They had to special order the rotors and would call me when they came in. The car was safe to drive. I will update when the rotors are changed

My take from all of this is the rotors are suspect of inferior quality, also the rotors rust too easily.

There are very good rotors, just good rotors , bad rotors and very bad rotors. Whats on my car?

Brakes squealed when I braked hard, not sure what the issue or fix is. Sounds like what has been described as a "metal-on-metal" sound. Have been reading on these and other forums that this seems to be a common issue with this car model. I was wondering if some of the other complainants had managed to fix their car so far since their problems seem to have occurred earlier. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra and before 6000 miles the brakes were grinding so loud that when I was on my cell phone people would ask me "what is that noise" when braking!!! I have gotten to the point that I slow way down so I do not actually have to stop. I am nervous if someone walks in front of my car that I am not going to stop!!!! I am getting a headache just from driving and my husband is FAR FROM HAPPY as he wanted me to buy another Honda. I called Hyundai headquarters and they said to bring the car back in even though I just had my 7500 mile checkup last week!! So despite working 6 days a week and taking care of my family I get to go back up there and get fed another line of crap. Of course this will take 40 minutes each way not counting an hour or two or worse to leave it there overnight. This needs to be reported so they can do a recall ASAP. I am bringing my car to my mechanic next and giving them his findings and his bill.

I started to hear my brakes grind at approx 800 miles. Brought my Elantra in and after inspection, it was found that "front brakes had rough surface. Took brakes apart cleaned surface of the pads and cut the rotors." 700 miles later -- exactly one month later -- back to dealer with same grinding issue. After inspection it was found - "front pads have a hard spot in the friction material that is grinding into the rotors - replaced front pads and rotors." Back to the dealer for a third time for same grinding issue - April 2013 (4,800 miles). "Technical Service Bulletin" "Elantra Sedan and Coupe Front Brake Pad Replacement - 2013MY (Service Campaign TM3)." So both front pads were changed according to the "Service Bulletin." In a nut shell, manufactured defected/sh*tty pads and replaced with not so sh*tty pads? Maybe "the third time is a charm.". We'll see. I will keep you all posted Lisa

When I took my car in to have it looked at, they told me they "already knew" what the problem was and that I needed my brakes replaced. I said ok, and they made me wait there while they replaced them. I signed the papers and was told it would be at "not charge". I read my paperwork they gave me once I got home and saw that they replaced my brakes but only "turned" the rotors. Now that I am reading everyone elses complaints, I am angry that I wasn't given the option to have NEW rotors. That was sneaky of them and I am calling them tomorrow and am going to speak with a manager to complain.

First and Foremost, Hyundai lied to everyone about the MPG because this car will see between 25 and 33 that's it. If you want 40 you better live on Route 66 or travel down hill a lot. Nevertheless, the steering wheel has been peeling on this car, paint was not sprayed properly from Manufacturer and now this metal on metal grinding sound as I come to a stop or at least pray that I am going to stop. I just wonder how much longer this will do before I trade it in on a Honda or Subaru as I need reliability and safety.
