CarComplaints.com Notes: So far the 2011 Elantra doesn't have the same volume of transmission problems that 2010 owners are fighting with. It also doesn't have the same pattern of steering and braking complaints that are piling up with the 2013 model year.
We're not saying the 2011 is perfect -- I mean, what were they thinking advertising their MPGs -- but there are worse choices.
The solution is replacing the steering rack if you experienced the thudding noise, eps failure, stiff steering wheel. If this happens while driving, don't panic - use both hands to steer it properly and get somewhere safe, its driveable, just dangerous in the case where you want to switch lanes.
While driving down the highway the steering has a very annoying stick to it when moving the steering wheel. Again my wife took it to the dealer to have it looked. Their response was they did notice it. Agreed it is slight but very annoying. Unless the dealer acknowledges it or someone gets hurt I am stuck.
I took the car back 4 times to the dealer before they could figure out what the issue was. This has been a recurring theme with Hyundai. The Hyundai rep looked at the car twice and could not correct. Very dangerous to drive a car that doesn't respond to the steering wheel.
This is one of many problems I have with this car. I've had 2 wheel bearings, axle and engine replaced as well as the steering column. Hyundai will not stand behind their product and told me it's all been covered by warranty. However the value of the car is nothing at this point. Its 3 years old and I'm still paying for it. Carfax looks like a joke. This car is a nightmare and piece of junk.
