CarComplaints.com Notes: So far the 2011 Elantra doesn't have the same volume of transmission problems that 2010 owners are fighting with. It also doesn't have the same pattern of steering and braking complaints that are piling up with the 2013 model year.

We're not saying the 2011 is perfect -- I mean, what were they thinking advertising their MPGs -- but there are worse choices.

This engine failure was noticed by my wife & I shortly after purchasing 03-20-2011. But it had an ongoing Transmission failure where the selling dealer made several attempts to stop an oil leak and finally replaced the transmission. The engine noise was noticeable early on and we requested all OEM related updates be researched when the selling dealer performed maintenance. But since Hyundai never stepped up to do the right thing in not allowing owners & their dealerships to deal with the defect, the ultimate failure is to come. See my notes to recent Hyundai:

Jessica I need your help on trying to get some help on Tiffanys Hyundai Engine failure. This Rep Gretchen does not have a clue on the below referenced TSB as she stated to me on the phone. Please call me to discuss the issue.

"Hyundai Elantra Engine Ticking Noise From Pistons: Lawsuit ... Jul 29, 2018 - According to the lawsuit, Hyundai has allegedly known about the piston problems and engine ticking noise since 2011 when changes were made to the pistons, followed by more changes in 2013. ... issued a technical service bulletin (TSB 14-20-002) in March 2014 about engine knocking in 2011-2013 Elantras." My engine had to be replaced due to something with the pistons, multiple mechanics told me it was nothing that I caused & there was nothing that I could have done to prevent it from happening. I was told many, many, many, many Hyundai Elantras had this same issue but sorry ass Hyundai will not do anything about it and they won't recall anything with the engine even though they are aware of the problem. I wouldn't accept a brand new Hyundai if it was given to me! Hands down the worst company in the world to buy from & you can forget them trying to help when something does go wrong!

Six months + left on warranty brought vehicle in for check up, complaining of loud engine knock on startup. Their "expert" technicians said nothing wrong. One month left on warranty brought vehicle in reporting transmission irregularities. "expert" technician found nothing wrong with transmission but engine was suffering from "piston slap" and was replaced under warranty. Lifetime warranty for present owner on engine for that problem. Seems OK now. Noted, in writing transmission irregularity. Placed in their file. Almost a year later, automatic transmission still searches for gear range.
