2002 Hyundai Elantra. Consumer writes in regards to recall notice concerning front steering or control mechanisms, rust and potential failures the consumer stated on March 10, 2010, she went to the dealer after receiving a recall notice. Upon inspection, it was determined the parts did not need to be replaced. On January 31, 2012, the same parts that were the subject of the recall failed. The consumer stated when the steering failed, the vehicle was violently forced into oncoming traffic which nearly resulted in a head-on collision and was then violently forced back across the lane in which she had been traveling, narrowly missing another vehicle. The vehicle had to be towed as it could not be driven. The consumer had other problems such as the engine light illuminating, due to an internal failure of the catalytic converter and a broken rear spring, as well as weak struts.

The lower control arm on my 2002 Hyundai Elantra broke during driving due to corrosion. Thank god I was coming to a stop and driving slowly. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where I was told there was no recall and that they would not cover the repair. After some heated discussion I was told the would warranty the control arm. When I asked if they would replace the other defective control arm that did not break I was told only the failed part would be replaced. I indicated that the car was not safe an I would not drive without the other control arm being replaced. They have not indicated if they will warranty the other. I believe Hyundai is trying to keep a major problem hidden from the public.

When braking consumer would hear a knocking noise coming from the rear end. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The dealer replaced many component attempting to alleviate the noise. The last repairs included the dealer replacing the right rear wheel bearing at 13250 miles.
