This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. The front passenger side window air bag was replaced in 2004. The day after the replacement, the air bag light illuminated again. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they stated that they could not determine the cause of the failure. The contact discovered an air bag safety recall online, but the dealer stated that no recall was available. In 2004, the contact also informed the dealer that the weather stripping on the back door frame was too small. The vehicle was still under warranty. The dealer pushed the weather stripping back on the door. In 2005, the contact heard a strange noise coming from the engine compartment and the vehicle stalled in hot weather. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. While at the dealer, she was informed of a brake line recall and clips were applied. The following day, the vehicle began squeaking when she applied and released the brakes. The recall numbers were unknown. The current mileage was 84,448 and failure mileage was 1,000. Abl.pco
I am the owner of a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. I purchased the vehicle new. Less than one year ago, my air bag light came on. I took it back to the dealer and they had to replace it because it had "dried up"! they replaced the bag. Less than a year later, but now my warranty is just up, the light is back on. I have notified the dealer, the consumer division of Hyundai, the CEO of Hyundai of my concerns and all they have offered to do is split the part, only, with me at 50%. I do not feel that this is a responsible solution for a company to take on a part from the manufacturer that is less than a year old. It has to be a safety issue to have faulty airbags! I have never had an accident with the vehicle, it has never been inflated...why would it "dry out"? I have a couple of other issues, but I don't believe they could be safety related. I contacted the CEO directly by certified mail and never got a response back from him. Abl.pco
Incident date is estimated. I have put approximately 17,000 miles on the vehicle during the course of each year (never more than 20K or less than 15K) and on three separate occasions, all between 9 and 15 months apart, my headlights have failed. On one occasion both lamps failed within a two weeks and before I could replace the first failed one resulting in a potentially hazardous situation where I would have had no headlights. Each time my local Hyundai service center has replaced them and on at least one occasion, made comments suggesting this was a common occurrence with my make/model vehicle. Interesting to note, the failures have always occurred in the winter.
