This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The transmissions on these cars fail and get stuck in gears causing dangerous driving situations and breakdowns. I had several of these cars as company transportation and they all have the same problem.
The contact owns a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. While driving between 25-40 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle decelerated. The vehicle began to accelerate after 4-5 seconds. The dealer stated that there was internal failure with the transmission's fourth gear. The current and failure mileages were 81,000. *updated 12/12/2007
Shift lock sticks in a 2000 auto Elantra with around 99,600 miles. I lock up in park in will not get out of park out U put pencil down shift lock hole. Or hit shifter hard forwarded it doesn't always work. Have not took to get serviced yet or looked at.
1) when slowing down at an intersection vehicle downshifts with a thumping noise and the car jerks violently. When accelerating from an intersection the vehicle upshifts with a violent jerk. 2) check engine light is on and dealer states the gear 4 ratio is incorrect. 3) dealer unable to perform replacement unless car owner covers cost.
Car continues to overheat. This is the fourth time it has happened; sometime the problem can not be duplicated and I am sent on my way even though it has happen before. The cylinder heads, water pump, thermostat, sensor and many others are only a few of the things that have been replaced on this problem. The car shuts-off without warning, and drives like a desiel engine (rough), you almost have to floor it to make the car stop and the dealer says it is normal; even though I hit another car going about 5mph because the car jerked foward and smashed my hood (I hit a Ford:excrussion so he had no damage) and the transmission does not shift correctly. Sure the dealer ship tries to fix the problem but there have been times I have been out of my car for a long as 7 to 8 weeks and many times there don't even know whats wrong. I have tried to contact rick case the dearlership owner and I never reiceve a call or email.

The passenger window will not roll down. The switch went out 2. dealership replaced once. The horn was bad. The car doesn't want to shift right. Went through 3 transmissions. Dealership says it fine. It still doesn't want to shift right. It doesn't want to take gas. Want to get rid of car.
Transmission is defective because seals were bad on vehicle, and transmission was leaking fluid. Had transmission replaced. Then on the 20th of November vehicle was picked up, and then on T 21st of November transmission was leaking again. Transmission was being replaced again.
3 months after buying my car, the transmission gasket cracked and they had a recall on it who knows how long I drove before it finally froze. They fixed it but now im having problems like slipping, bucking at stopp lights and a tingy sound while excellerating the dealer says they tested and finds nothing wrong with it. So all of us with this problems are just in a confused state huh.
Vehicle does not downshift when slowing down at an intersection and picking up speed again. Driver has to manually shift down to 2nd gear on automatic transmission. Also, vehicle is reluctant to upshift blocking out engine power. This condition has caused many close call at intersections.
Brakes would pulsate when applied. Took to dealership 6 times for problem. Rotors needed to be resurfaced. Then, took to different dealerships for repairs. Currently, has steady banging. Problem not repaired. Representative sent, but nothing solved. Had contacted Mr. Grato and manufacturer. Informed not repairing brakes for seventh time. The vehicle had brake and transmission leaking problems. The consumer considered the vehicle lemon, and declined to take it to the dealer for repair.
There are two problems, I am not sure if they are related or not 1) car will not shift out of park if on an incline. In order to get it out of park, you must force the shifter. 2) car has problems with initial acceleration after a stop. Will not go into first gear, transmission will "thump" into gear. Transmission fluid level is adequate
Intermittently vehicle stalled out and died without warning when cruise control was on and brakes applied. Dealer has replaced transmission/ ignition harness/tps module, and ignition coil. But problem has reoccurred. Manufacturer has been notified.
