Directly from the mechanic... "The Hyundai dealer must have gotten a bad hit of acid, the vehicle has shims for adjusting the valve lash. This thing doesn't have lifters at all. So, after further review, when I pulled the VVT solenoid out, one of the screens was covered in metal. We gave the Hyundai dealer the VIN and he gave us the wrong parts . ???? that said, the parts that we got over, intending to replace are not the problem. The engine has a major malfunction and my suggestion if you want to keep the car is to replace the engine. A used engine would be between 4-5k and that’s a junkyard pull."
For reference, KBB values this vehicle at just under $2 grand, so 4-5k for a used engine is ridiculous. I contacted Hyundai and nothing, not even a reply.
