I bought a 2012 Hyundai Accent in September 2012. It was a used car owned by Hyundai, Somewhere in the sales process the saleswoman pointed out to me when she was showing me the cargo space that the car did not come with a spare tire. By that time I was already sold on the car and was unable to process the ramifications of driving without a spare. Upon later reflection, not knowing where or when a flat would occur, I didn’t want to depend on the inflator kit provided and didn’t relish the idea of having to be towed and all the inconvenience that would entail; so I began to explore getting a spare to carry onboard. I first decided to get a full size tire and use it in the rotation. But Hyundai doesn’t recommend using a 5th tire in the rotation with radial tires. If I wanted to use it just as a spare, I would also have to get a wheel. Then it would have to be installed on that wheel and balanced. Then I would have to purchase the tools to change a tire. The cost kept adding up. And then, the icing on the cake, it wouldn’t fit into the wheel well! Plan two: I’ll just order a “donut†spare kit. Surprise, surprise, they don’t make one for my car. At this point I was so upset all I could think of was how soon I could unload this car. Buying a car is a big deal and you want to be happy with it and it was causing me all this grief.
Thank goodness, I found a Hyundai Accessory Store that provides a custom designed spare tire using genuine Hyundai parts, professionally mounted and balanced in a kit with everything needed to change a flat. And it fits in the wheel well. I don’t ever want to have to need it, but it is comforting to know it is there when (not if) I do. And it cost me under $300.
I WILL NEVER BUY A HYUNDAI AGAIN AND DO NOT PLAN TO USE THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO SERVICE MY CAR UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
