This is a throw away car never intended to last more then a couple years. These cars were not made to drive 80km or above for more then a few minutes.. why??.. the gearing is terrible and not suited for anything other then stop sign to stop sign driving and any hwy driving results in wicked fast gas consumption. example in My parents 2005 accent gs 1.6l automatic which I constantly work on.. yes I'm a lic. automotive mechanic in Ontario.. Their car traveling at 80 kph is running at just over 2000rpm which is nuts my Yukon at 80 kph is at 1000 rpm( as I said thought accent not a hwy car) this is still way to high. The car has only 220,000km on it and my parents always took it in for regular maint. at a Hyundai Dealer and did maint. that was ALWAYS suggested weather it needed it or not however it became a joke taking it there because they seemed to always try and pull one over on you and replace parts that were already done.. this past few months I have done brakes wires and plugs and just 3 weeks before the tranny issues I replaced the starter.
My father was driving home a couple weeks ago when it began to act funny. It started revving up to 4000rpm at 80kph, when he pulled past the driveway to back in he found out he also now has NO REVERSE and drove down the end of the road turning around and driving into the drive way. I tested the car with my obd2diagnostic reader and no codes present. I called a friend that works at a well known Transmission shop, and he said "Ah yea I've heard that before most likely the clutches have burnt out explaining the reverse problem too!"he said they have done a lot of rebuilds on them at a cost of $1500-$2000. (worth more then the car now). So I called every auto wrecker / recycler within 3 cities in every direction and they have such a problem they cant keep them in or they are totally garbage. Almost every place I called laughed and said best of luck.
So my search for a transmission or some poor soul looking for other parts car(minus tranny) continues.......
