On Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024 on I95 in Virginia driving back to Florida, going down hill at approximately 70 mph in moderate traffic, the engine seemed to stall without warning and the steering and brake pedal began to freeze up when I had eased off the gas to coast briefly down hill (in order to keep in the flow of traffic). I attempted to give it gas, pumping the pedal, and a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up; what sounded like the truck’s starter buzzed loudly as it restarted. I avoided an accident in traffic by not panicking and luckily because the vehicle behind us was not tailgating. It could have been catastrophic.
This was the third or so time this had happened in the nearly three years we owned the truck. For the past incidents I had asked the tech at the Dealer (Coggin of Jacksonville) about this and if it was a safety feature or an issue that I should be concerned with but they know nothing. We then thought it might be the Auto Idle, but the subsequent two times we had the feature off.
Update from Feb 20, 2025 I should add that for this event of Dec 4, 2024, I took the truck to Honda of the Avenues on Dec 20, where they did a complete diagnostic on the truck with the presumption that it was still under warranty. The tech was able to pull data from the truck's computer that there indeed had been an event on that day at ~ 69 mph, but it read as a transmission event. But there was not enough data to diagnose what the issue is. I frankly do not know what the next steps are but to drive the truck and hope for the best. I do not want to trade it in and leave the issue for someone else...
It happened again - February 19 2025 / 8:13 pm. On I95 north going through Jax on the way to the airport to pick up my wife.
In the middle lane (second over from left lane) at about 60mph the engine started to lose power in spite of my foot being on the gas. I kept my foot on the gas and the engine power came back. No buzz sound. At ~ 31,530 miles on the odometer. This was the least severe of these episodes though still unnerving on the highway in traffic.
I called the dealer this morning and left a message.
Update from Feb 21, 2025: Feb 21, 2025 - Marcellis, service advisor at Honda of the Americas, returned my call from yesterday morning (Feb 20) and asked me to bring the truck in.
I took the truck to Honda of the Avenues again and left it there so they could read the data for the Wednesday evening event.
On January 10 2025, at 7:08 pm driving in Jacksonville on I 95 south near Butler Blvd, doing approximately 62 / 65 mph in the Middle lane, with the Auto Idle deactivated, the truck had a sudden loss of power (like previous events) when we were cruising and coasting (I had eased off the gas to ensure not to tailgate the vehicle in front of us. The truck felt like it was stalling, I pumped the gas lightly, thent here was a high pitch buzz as the engine came back. My wife noted the time and I called out the speed to her as she took notes.
We again brought the truck to the dealer and they kept it for a few days attempting to recreate the situation, but they could not. I have the invoices thought there was not charge.
This happened on the interstate. This happens repeatedly (about once per week) for my spouse, but today was the first time for me. I was changing lanes at about 75 MPH, and the tachometer dropped to zero despite my further depressing the accelerator. I took my foot off and again depressed the accelerator and the engine reengaged. Anyone else out there experiencing this?
Update from Feb 20, 2025: Just heard from another who had same thing happen to include reporting the same "zip" noise we hear when it happens. My Honda dealer could not find any fault codes. My current hypothesis is the collision avoidance radar detects something it believes is a danger and engages (but I don't see the normal "brake" warning), even though I don't feel I am tailgating when this happens. My hope is this doesn't become a major issue. Thanks
