tailgate release handle not staying closed, can't open

When I got to open the tailgate, I see that the handle isn't always completely closed. If I pull the handle, the tailgate doesn't open. I have to push the handle closed all the way, then I can pull to open. It's a minor annoyance, but I wonder if it may get worse, to the point that the tailgate won't open at all.
