CarComplaints.com Notes: It's worrying when the top category for 2016 Honda Pilot problems are transmission problems. Owners report jerking when accelerating. Also as the first model year of the redesigned 3rd generation Pilot, it's not a good sign.

Honda released a TSB on October 29 2016 that's possibly related. The TSB deals with a "a judder from the torque converter lock-up clutch ... while driving between 20 and 60 mph" due to deteriorated transmission fluid resulting from "specific driving conditions". In the TSB, Honda states they are developing a software fix to try to keep the transmission fluid temperature within spec.

We are keeping a close eye on this defect trend because if certain driving conditions can affect transmission shifting in the first year of ownership, we'd hate to think what 10+ years will do.

2016 Honda Pilot sudden rough acceleration while pulling up to the driveway. This happened after accelerator was released before the approach. Fortunately the brakes were applied on time before crashing into the property.

Cabin fills-up with gasoline fumes when at rest/ide/not moving. Fumes come from air vents and only happens when pulling air from outside. No gasoline smell occurs when air system is in re-circulation mode. Gasoline smell goes away when car is in motion. I took it to the Honda dealership in bozeman, mt and they stated they cannot find anything wrong and the computer does not find anything wrong. Technicians say they can't smell the fumes but every passenger that rides in my car can eventually smell the gasoline fumes. I think the technicians can't smell it since they are desensitized from being exposed to gas fumes routinely, so not their fault. Gasoline smell can also be detected when in the garage (car not running) and no other source of gasoline is in the garage (garage doors were left open for 15 minutes to evacuate any fumes from when car was on prior to gas smell). This started to occur approx. November 2018. I searched online and found a forum of others having the same problem. Some state that technicians eventually found liquid gas in the evaporation canister. Forum here: Https://www.piloteers.org/forums/114-2016-third-generation-Pilot/99809-gas-smell-cabin.html I will keep taking my Pilot back to dealerships until the problem is fixed and will suggest checking the evap. Canister. This is a very unsafe problem to be occurring with Honda not taking the problem seriously. This is not the fault of the dealership technicians but with Honda itself.

As you accelerate, the car goes in and out of getting fuel to the engine. The RPM’'s drop and increase at least 1,000 rpms each second. Vehicle is in motion. Happens both on city streets, but more so on the open highway, especially if small Texas hills are involved. Took car to Honda dealership. They cleaned the fuel lines, and reset the computer. This has helped.

On Saturday November, 24, at approximate 9:45 am I was driving uphill and noticed my engine was making an odd sound. It made it when I accelerated, but stopped as soon as I took my foot off the gas. As I got to the top of the hill, there was no more sound. About 1 minute later I pulled into a shopping center, the car was on a slight upward angle, and I was going to turn into a parking spot, when all of a sudden my car accelerated on its own valition. I was approximately 2-3 feet away from a parked car, and my car felt like it was going full speed towards this car. At the time, I believe my foot was on the brake, which made it even more shocking why the car was propelling forward. I quickly stomped on the brake again and the car came to a stop. It hit the parked car with two occupants.

The vehicle starts to stutter while driving down the street. In addition, while driving the RPM gauge fluctuates going down the highway while maintaining speed. Brought vehicle in to Honda dealership they diagnosed the problem as fuel injector failed and it wasn't the first time of them hearing about this problem. My 2016 Honda Pilot does not function properly. The "emissions" check engine light has come on three different times, all with less than 40,000 miles on the vehicle. The Honda dealer claims that they fixed the problem each time; but that's not the case. The light continues to come on in during normal driving conditions.

I had pulled out of a parking place and was waiting in the traffic lane to exit the area. There were two cars in front of us. The cars were stopped. I was approximately 20-25 feet behind the car in front of me. I took my foot off the brake in my car to let it idle forward. As I approached the Yukon I reapplied the brake. The car accelerated to what sounded like full RPM's and I applied the brakes as hard as I could and nothing happened. The car slammed into the Yukon with such an impact that both front airbags deployed. The driver side airbag hit me in the face. The passenger airbag did not reach my wife in the passenger seat. She immediately experienced severe chest pain and rapid heart beat. Bystanders called 911 and two park Ranger arrived in approx. 15-20 minutes. The Ranger finished taking pictures and asked me to pull in to a parking spot out of the travel lane of the parking lot. I started the car and proceeded slowly and turned into a parking spot. As I applied the brake to park, the same phenomenon occurred again. The car accelerated forward over a curb and walkway and struck a pedestrian before coming to a stop on a retaining wall. I desperately tried to stop the car without success. The ems was there shortly after this occurrence. A Ranger asked me how fast I was moving and I stated I had no idea. I asked him to ask the Ranger who was right behind me and he said 5 mph. I exited the vehicle after they transported the pedestrian on the backboard.the ambulance was ready to take my wife to the hospital so I approached the park Ranger and told him that I needed to ride in the ambulance with my wife.

My family traveled in this vehicle to carlsbad last week for vacation, including myself, my wife, our 13 year old daughter and 11 year old son. The vehicle worked perfectly until we were on our way home Saturday, July 22, 2017. We were on I-10 approximately 1 hour East of phoenix in the right lane with the cruse set at the 75mph speed limit. There were no cars in front of us for at least a mile. All the sudden, without any warning whatsoever, nearly all the vehicle system lights came on and the vehicle slowed at an emergency rate down to approximately 40mph in about 2 seconds. I immediately hit 'cancel' on the cruise and stepped on the gas, but the vehicle continued to slow quickly. I immediately started to move to the shoulder of the road and noticed the 18 wheel tractor trailer behind us make an emergency swerve to the left and missed hitting us by inches. We were nearly involved in an accident that could have easily been fatal. All this took place in about a 5-10 second timeframe. After stopping on the shoulder of the road I made note that the vehicle was showing a transmission problem, an emissions problem, an AWD problem and I think just about every other issue light was lit up. I tried to get the vehicle back on the road, but it would not go any higher than 3rd gear and the dash kept indicating a transmission and AWD problem. I pulled over again and turned the vehicle off and back on. At that point the only indicator light that lit up was the emission system problem (see attached picture). I reentered the interstate and the transmission was working properly again. We stopped at the next gas station and filled the gas tank and upon restarting the engine the emission light was still on. We carefully drove home at 65'70mph. The following day (Sunday), the emission light was no longer on.

On 3 separate occasions, our 2016 Honda Pilot elite has completely shut down while we were driving - twice on the highway and once in busy traffic. When this happens, the engine, transmission, power steering, etc. All stop working and the car displays every error you can imagine. I have posted a video here: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?V=btebmywy-is this is very scary because there is nothing you can do to get the car working again - luckily, we have been able to coast to the side of the road. When it first happened, we called Honda emergency roadside assistance and we had a tow on the way when we tried restarting the car several times in a row and that cleared the errors. Since then, we have used the same trick to get the car running again but it has happened twice in the last week - very scary! I have found other similar complaints online so it's clear that there's some kind of computer or electric problem with this model - it's just not obvious what triggers it. We are going to try to trade in our car for a different model because Honda has not been able to provide any help in spite of the fact that we have taken it to the dealer 3 times - I am very disappointed with their service on this.

On November 10, 2015, at approximately 5:30pm, my wife and I were traveling on North I-75 in southwest Ohio. Besides ourselves, we had our two young grandchildren in the car. The car's computer started displaying a changing series of warnings generally indicating various system failures. The car basically started to shut down. Since we were in the far right lane, my wife was able to coast over to the shoulder. If we had been traveling in the middle or left lane of traffic, there would have been little if any chance of moving over to the curb. The car, with two young children in the back seat, would have shut down leaving us in the path of very fast moving cars and trucks. The only outcome was a potentially deadly high-speed rear end collision. We had to have the car towed to our Honda dealer approximately 40 miles away. On November 27, the day after thanksgiving, the same failure occurred at approximately 2:30pm. This time we were 400 miles from home traveling East on highway 11-E, between greeneville and johnson city, Tennessee. I caught the failure early enough before the engine shut down and was able to coast the car to a parking lot of an out-of-business store. This time instead of two young children, we had two elderly great grandparents. The dealer that handled the first incident diagnosed the problem as a software issue. However, the second dealer diagnosed it as a fuel pump relay not properly connected. This relay requires a special tool to install it. See attached letter with attachments for all details including service invoices.
