Excessive Oil Consumption
2009 Honda Pilot (Page 2 of 2)
This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Honda dealer.
CarComplaints.com Notes: Previously we had awarded the 2009 Pilot "Seal of Pretty Good", but have since removed that honor due to all the continuing complaints about excessive oil consumption.
This Honda Pilot oil consumption defect was subject to a class action lawsuit in 2013. However not all 2009 Honda Pilots were covered by the settlement & by now the warranty extension has expired. The oil consumption complaints keep coming in.

- Honda Acknowledges The Oil Problem In TSB #11-033 - In July of 2011 Honda quietly acknowledged the problem in the form of a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB #11-033). The TSB says the probable cause of the problem is the VCM (variable cylinder management) and should be fixed by a simple software update at a certified Honda mechanic.
- Simple 5-minute Fix Excessive Oil Consumption, Oil Burning, Spark Plug Fouling And Disabling VCM - Simple 5-minute fix for Honda with 3.5L V6 Engine with VCM (Variable Cylinder Management). n 2013 a class-action lawsuit was filed against Honda, 1.6 million vehicles between 2008-2013 had been identified having potential for high oil consumption and misfires due to VCM Operation on 3.5L V6 Engines. Honda extended the warranty for these vehicles but did not correct the problem. This did not include the millions of vehicles between 2005-2007 that also had the same defective issues and had owners complaining of repeated failure of costly motor mounts to VCM operation, damaged transmission torque converters, fouled spark plugs and excessive oil consumption at the rate of up to 1 qt for every 1000 miles. Honda claimed this was normal.

My Honda Pilot is burning excessive oil. I first noticed it about 10 months ago when I took it in for a oil change and the mechanic told my that my oil was off stick. I was confused because it was at the normal oil change mileage interval. After that event I started to keep an eye on the oil level and I noticed that it would start to drop shortly after I change the oil, so now I have to monitor the oil level and add oil as needed. This is so annoying because this is a very expensive vehicle and I'm also afraid that if I ever have to be away for an extended period of time and wife is driving it low on oil that it might do some serious damage to the engine. I called Honda corporation and they said that my vin number was not cover under the recall, I don't understand how my vehicle could not be covered when I am clear experiencing the exact same problems.
