The contact owns a 1999 Honda Passport. The contact stated his wife hit a pot hole, and then there was a noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. The next the day, as the contact drove the vehicle to his mechanic, the rear strut came off and it was hanging down. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where he was informed. The rear passenger side strut was severely rusted, which caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the issue and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 10V436000 (suspension:rear). The contact owns a 1999 Honda Passport 4WD. The contact stated that the frame and its brackets were severely rusted. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 81,000. Updated 12/12/11 the consumer stated the rust went from the cross member, to the rear of the vehicle on the driver's side.. the ABS light illuminated and the gas gauge never worked correctly. S10 appropriate handling-letter to the secretary from expressing concerns regarding the safety of the 1988-2002 Honda Passports. The consumer stated his daughter was driving the vehicle, when suddenly, she could no longer control it. She was able to get the vehicle to a repair facility. Once the vehicle was placed on the rack, it was discovered the struts had detached from the from frame which had rusted out. The consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer where it was examined by their body shop. The consumer was informed the frame was completely unrepairable and it would cost more to fix it than the vehicle was worth. The consumer received a recall notice in December 2010 regarding the rust problem after he had already taken it to a junkyard.
The contact owns a 1999 Honda Passport. The contact stated while driving 35-40 mph, the vehicle became abnormally hard to control. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the vehicle was test driven and the contact was advised that the front frame strut was corroded and causing frame to fail. I have had the same problem as all the other Honda Passport/rodeo owners with my rear suspension linkage. I am a college student and extremely upset for I put all my money into this vehicle to have a reliable truck at school. Now I am up a creek, with the possibility of losing 2 jobs due to the fact I have no truck. My linkage rusted off at the bracket with the rest of the rotting frame on the front side (closest to the engine) of the axle chassis connecting bar. I didn't get into an accident due to the fat I diagnosed there was a major problem before anything bad happened. But no it is unsafe to drive and I have no transportation. This is my 1999 Honda Passport.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Passport. While conducting routine maintenance he found the front and rear suspension was corroded and covered with rust. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there were no recalls for this failure. There was a related recall but the manufacturer had not provided an owner notification schedule; NHTSA recall#10V436000; suspension: Rear. My 1999 Honda Passport was in need of a inspection sticker. I proceeded to the service station for my sticker when the right rear shock separated from the frame and was dragging on the road. I returned home and inspected the frame which was rusted and falling apart. The top coil spring mounts were pushed up against the body. The rear wheel stabilizer hangers are ready to let go. I called repair shops and was told these vehicles are not repairable because you can't weld on top of rust. My Honda now sits in my yard. It is drivable but would be a hazard to my life and safety as well as others.
The contact owns a 1999 Honda Passport. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance. The technician detected the rear subframe exhibited rust. The front sway bar had broken as a result of excessive rust corrosion which was replaced. The contact stated the rear axle and wheel bearings were replaced on the vehicle one year ago. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Driving approx 45 miles per hr. Passport suddenly pulled us into the left lane. We were able to get back into correct lane and pull vehicle over. Drove directly to our mechanic at approx 20 miles per hr. For about 2 miles. He looked under the vehicle and said trailing head was broke from frame and frame was rusted. The vehicle is sitting in my drive unable to drive. Both sides are broke at trailing head and rusted so bad you can push and break a hole in the frame. The frame is the only rust on the vehicle. We were lucky there was no traffic coming towards us and that we were not going very fast. There was no prior notice, all of a sudden the car veered left into the other lane and it was hard to get it controlled and into the correct lane and pulled over.
Frame rust around the spot where rear control arm is attached to frame. It is completely rusted thru. The part is still attached to the frame, but the frame itself has rusted through on either side and has separated from the vehicle. I heard some clicking noises and stopped vehicle to check it, and found the part totally separated from the vehicle frame, and proceeded to call a tow truck.
I have a 1999 Honda Passport that has a corrosion problem in the left back rear lower link to the frame. It is rusted to the point where there is a big crack between that piece and the frame. It was noticed today when I mounted new tires on the vehicle.
Consumer complained of an unusual noise coming from the back trunk, dealer informed that after recall 00V058 was complete, the noise would be gone, after recall repair, the noise was still in the back and the only way that it would disappear is when the upper tail gate glass was open.
Car & steering wheel vibrate & shake so hard it tends to put my hands & arms to sleep. Honda does not consider this a safety issue. The car has been in the shop seven times to address this problem; they have only made the problem worse. Now Honda expects me to drive the car 45 more days while waiting for a "master mechanic" to find the time to work on the car. This is totally unacceptable, I do not feel safe or have confidence in this car. I have filed a BBB report and contacted a lawyer. It is also my understanding Honda/rodeo made over 30 changes in the suspension system of the 2000 models.
Original problem was fuel sensor, followed by cylinders being replaced, unresolved whining noise, recall on rear suspension, and now recall on head impact protection. Car has constantly been in shop since purchase, and we have serious concerns about the overall safety and durability of this model. Local dealer has been extremely helpful in trying to resolve problems, but overall quality and safety issues have us seeking answers from you as to what steps we can take to have vehicle replaced by manufacturer.
Recall 00V058000 Isuzu/rear axle; when arriving at the dealership for schedule appointment on April 5, 2000, owner was informed that part(s) were not available to correct recall campaign. Dealer not sure when parts will be available.
