I bought my 2010 Honda Odyssey to have the room for my six children. I thought I was getting a great van but I have come to realize I was wrong.

Driving home one evening with all eight of us in the van, my check engine light came on. I called my father whom is a licensed mechanic and he had me bring it in to hook it up to the computer. I had two codes pop up and both were for oil consumption. I had just done an oil change 1500 miles prior to this and when I checked it, it was bone dry. I started doing research on my van and found a lawsuit against Honda for this very issue. I contacted Honda immediately and was told there was no issue found and that I would have to pay out of pocket for any expenses that may arise. The rep at Honda told me this was a feature on my van... please explain to me how in the hell is oil consumption a feature.

I wish I had never bought this van. Oil consumption is not my only issue, but the one that gets under my skin the most. I was the second owner of this vehicle, bought with 80k miles, perfect CarFax, at 100k miles it all went down hill. Going back to my blue Oval Heritage!

I started noticing usage of oil early on and figured it was just break in issues. After a road trip in the spring of 2014, the vehicle was two quarts down after 3000 miles. I have been tracking ever since then, adding oil on a monthly basis. I had the oil changed in November 2014 and had to add 1 1/2 quarts after driving 2500 miles to top it off. At my 90000 mile service (performed at 91000 miles, the car was down another 1 1/2 quarts. I would call this excessive.

We owned the van about 6 months, bought used with 52,000 miles. At 56,000 miles engine light came on, checked oil, it was almost empty. Added oil and drove to the closest garage, on way the ATS light also came on and vehicle began to run rough.

It was explained to me by mechanic that the fuel assist system shuts down cylinders to conserve fuel and in the process oil can begin to pool. The oil then is burnt up as the computer turns different cylinders on and off creating spark plug fouling. Over time the pistons and the seals break down creating more oil consumption and eventual engine failure.

We called Honda who is changing the spark plugs for free- seems very odd such a service is free unless they are well aware of the issue...

Purchased used. Odyssey consumes 1 quart of oil per 2000 miles of driving. Had ECM updated. P3400 and 3497 were tripped when oil was low. After ECM update it continues to consume oil. Back at dealer for oil consumption tests....

I have had my car towed three times to a dealer because my engine light can on. When I called the dealer I was told if the light was blinking, don't drive the car have it towed. I was told if the light is on steady then I can drive the car but I need to have it looked at. Three times it was blinking, that means a tow each time and once it was on steady and I took it to the shop. While I was out of town twice I had to have the car towed to a Honda Dealer in Delaware (Price Honda) they told me I was out of oil, but I had no indicaiton (no light on the car and my oil percentage was not low). The first time at Price Honda they stated I was out of oil and one of my cylinders was not firing. After a strugle with them to cover this under my waranty they did. Within two months I was back on my way to Delaware and the light came on again (blinking) and once again I had the car towed to Price Honda. Yep, out of oil again...no light, no nothing. The filled up the oil told me to take the car to my dealer.....Yes, I have a Waranty that I bought through Hall Honda in VA Beach when I bought the car new. When we got back to VA we took the car back to the shop and since the light was out, I was told they really can't do anything.....yea right!!!! They put me on an oil consumption plan where I bring the car back to them to check if the car is buring/using oil at a high rate. I just came from the shop today and I was told the oil consupmption is within limits.

This is what was typed on my paperwork

"CHECKED OIL LEVEL AND FOUND OIL 24OZ LOW. VEHICLE MILEAGE ON LAST VISIT WAS 60,868. CALCULATED OIL CONSUMPTION IS ONE QUQARTER PER 1585.3 MILES. TH IS LEVEL OF CONSUMPTION IS WITHIN NORMAL PARAMETERS OF ONE QUARTER PER 1000 TO 3000 MILES DRIVEN. RECOMMEND CHECKLING OIL LEVEL FREQUENTLY AND FOLLOING SERVICE ROUTINE USING HONDA OIL SUPPLIES."

I find this very troublesome since I know the check engine light will be coming back on shortly. However, I was told I didn't need to bring my car back to the shop I could check it myself.

Ouch!!! I guess I will have to think hard before I purchase another HONDA!

Our honda van has used a half a quart of oil per month since it was new. Two dealerships told us this problem was characteristic of honda odessey vans and nothing can be done about it. This is very frustrating since this is a new vehecle. I can not imagine what makes this engine so different than other honda engines. We had a honda accord 08, and it did not use oil.
