Honda 3.5 L V6 have major problem with oil consumption with VCM, Variable Cylinder Management Deactivation system. First Two times, when I did my own oil change, only about 3.5 qt was recovered from the drain. When there should be at least 4.5 qts Took it to Honda dealer (Galpin Honda, Mission Hills) and told me that that is not considered as Excessive oil burning. Since then, around 50% life oil life remain sign shows on the dash board, I just simply add about 1 QT of engine oil. around 70k miles, during the cold start, engine stated to making annoying knocking noise. and went about after few minutes, Since I had Honda Care extended warranty, took it go Galpin Honda and was told that Timing Belt Tensioner was broken and they had replaced it. (around $100 K Miles) I was recommended to get the Valve adjustment done, because, there were residual knocking noise from the engine camshaft. I declined the Valve Adjustment, because, I wanted to get it done when I get my timing belt replaced.
Now, I am at 112k miles, when I went to get my timing belt replaced by local independent mechanic, that I have been using for few years. I asked him to do the valve adjustment. He called me and told me that there are few places on the Camshaft that excessive wear on the Camshaft and he could not do the valve adjustment. He also told me that is very common issues with these 3.5L engines, on the Odysseys and Pilots.
I am so angry at the Honda Dealer, because, the could not identify the Camshaft issue, only trying to make extra $$ recommending that I should get valve adjustment. and now that my Honda Care Warranty is over by 5k miles, they are not willing to even try to get this covered. I am going to call Honda and talk to them to cover the repair.
