Transmission on 1999 Honda Odyssey minivan started to fail at 85,000 miles. Told by dealer that only recourse was to replace at my cost ($4,000). Many other owners have had similar problems.
I noticed my 1999 Honda Odyssey had trouble shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear. Then the check engine and tcs lights came on simultaneously. Took van to the dealer. I was informed, with 57,600 miles and less than four years on it, my van needed a new transmission. Warranty was recently expired. Called american Honda to see if they would cover any repairs. Operator asked what I expected of them. I asked them to cover the cost of parts (about $4600). She said she'd submit the request. She didn't mention that this has happened to a large number of 1999 Odyssey (apparently also 2000's, 2001's and 2002's.) suspect (from a web search) that this will be a recurring problem.
Transmission failed while vehicle was traveling at slow speed---or a major accident would have occurred in my opinion. (I have been a police officer for over 18 years). ******dims 11 IVOQ entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*******770793.

Had transmission problem on my 99 Honda Odyssey. Replaced it at 60000 miles at aamco transmission. Honda denied my claim because I did not bring it to the dealer. Now at 90000 miles, the engine light came on again and the shifting feels rough. This is a design problem that Honda tries to ignore. This transmission problem can cause an accident if the second gear does not engage while we are on the freeway.
I have a 1999 Honda Odyssey with 65,000 miles on it. Our check engine light came on and I was told by a transmission shop that the dif. Bearings were failing and causing the solenoids to malfunction. They say I need a total transmission rebuild. I have found that there are many many more out there with the same problem. I am pursuing Honda to cover the replacement because it is obviously a under engineered / defective design.
Transmission loud noise - it is one of symptoms of transmission problem that indicated in the 2000-2001 Odyssey recall notice. Honda should extend the warrenty to 1999 model as well.
Vehicle will not shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd gear while driving. The dealership had to replace the automatic transmission, 23000 miles later, problem recurred and transmission needs to be replaced again.
Problem with shifting on automatic transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear. Engine races and does not want to go into 3rd gear. Had transmission repaired, and found that the 2nd gear clutch plates had severe premature wear, and the clutch plates were grooved (not smooth like the 3rd gear clutch plates, and not what was shown in the repair manual). The replacement clutch plates were smooth, as shown in the repair manual.
