For about a year now my Insight has been consuming extra oil. I bought the car in Washington State and drove it to Virginia to attend graduate school. I took it to my mechanic here in NoVA, who found nothing wrong with the car, but advised me to continue adding oil as needed, which I have been doing about every two weeks.
Just finished graduate school and on 5/17/2019 was making my way home to Seattle, from Northern Virginia, to begin my first job. One hour outside of NoVA my car started to decelerate and sputtered to a stop, on I-70, as trucks sped past me. It was terrifying. I was towed to Hagerstown Honda, who are lovely and helpful people. They called Honda to get the engine damage covered under my warranty, and because a spark plug had melted and caused engine failure, Honda declined to cover it. This weekend doing more research in the midst of anxiety attacks and wondering how the heck I am going to get home, and pay off $6000 on a car that is now disabled, I discovered the class action suit against Honda on the same issue in other models, the many documented complaints by Insight owners who have had this problem, and Honda's failure to take care of its consumers. This is my third Honda, and I love them, which is why I trusted them when I bought a Honda Certified Vehicle, and the additional warranty (that now also declines to cover the damage because Honda will not).
I am financially fragile right now, being a new college graduate. I have a job, but haven't even started it yet because I literally cannot get home. I don't have $12,000 to replace my engine (yes, this is what they quoted me). How can Honda abuse its customers like this? How can they treat me, a loyal Honda consumer, like this? They actually endangered my life, and are continuing to endanger other Insight owners right now. There needs to be a class action suit for Insight owners, and I am ready to join. I know Honda extended the warranty on the engine for 8 years, which my car should qualify for, but they are arguing the spark plug caused the engine damage!! The class action suit showed that "the vehicles contained a systematic design defect that enables oil to enter into the engine's combustion chamber. The alleged defect leads to premature spark plug degradation and engine malfunction.†Pretty clear to me! I mean, I am an evidence based social scientist. The evidence is pretty clear here. Honda needs to repair my car and get me home to Seattle, NOW!
