I have not had this issue happen very much. But it does happen occasionally. I will be braking to a red light or stop sign, and the car will lurch forward. The rpm will go up for a brief moment and then come back down as fast it went up. This event sometime occurs when accelerating from a dead stop right after I have stopped like at a stop sign. the rpm will go up and the car wont go anywhere. This also could be a transmission issue. I have always maintained my car and it still performs great 99 percent of the time. I would say changing your CVTF fluid and making sure it Honda Genuine CVTF. It has happened less after having fresh fluid. But as for the rpm going up while stopping. That could be a software update thing.

My complaint sounds like several others. I was pulling into a parking space, slowly depressing brake, lifted my foot slightly and car lurched forward into a chain link fence, airbag did not deploy. Front lower panel and one light was damaged, estimate given was $800 to repair.

I contacted dealer about self-acceleration and they agreed to run diagnostics at no charge. I also called Honda America and they said they had no alerts, recalls or high trends on this issue. They arranged to have a factory rep do the inspection at my local dealer. They had the car for a day and were unable to find anything wrong, no errors in logs etc and they could not reproduce, no surprise. This has happened maybe 12 times since I've had the car, but never to such an extreme and have always been able to stop quickly before. This time it wouldn't stop till I released pressure on brake and hit it a 2nd time hard, but the fence helped also :)

This is a very scary issue as I picture the car doing this at a crosswalk with a pedestrian! Will it take 13 deaths for a recall, like GM?

Insight EX 1.3L

  • CVT transmission
  • 42,400 miles

I was driving on an road with no traffic and came upon a red light. As I applied the brakes, I experienced an acceleration surge while braking. I could feel the brakes working but the engine began to rev up and was trying to overpower the brakes. In desperation I pushed the shifter into Neutral (N). The engine continued to rev for a moment then returned to normal. Then I was able to proceed and the Insight acted normal.

I called Honda about the problem they recorded it and told me to bring it into a dealer. The dealer could not find anything wrong with the car. The dealer did upgrade the software for PGMFI, IMA Motor, and A/T. We will see what happens next and hope it does not happen in traffic.
