Two weeks ago, I was driving my 2016 Honda HRV when it started to lose power and the brake system light, engine light, along with other lights warning lights came on my dashboard. I was able to pull over safely. I was able to shift gears, but car would not engage in either drive or reverse. All lights were on and I was able to turn off car and turn it back on. When the tow truck driver arrived, he was able to turn it on and get it to drive forward. The Honda Dealership checked it out and initially said the speed sensor came up but when they checked it, it was fine. The only thing they found wrong was a loose cable on the positive side of the battery and said this may have caused the problem.

Two weeks later, I am 150 miles away from home and had just got off the freeway, when my car loses all power with no warning lights at all. It turned on and off, however, the car would not engage in either drive or reverse. I had it towed again to the same Honda Dealership. Manager agreed to waive the diagnostic fee since I had paid for it 2 weeks earlier. I received a call from service rep reporting they were metal shavings in the transmission fluid, lots of it, which caused the transmission to break down completely. They said original cause was that transmission fluid had not been changed.

I have been reading forums on HRV and there are numerous complaints of the CVT transmission going out with same symptoms as mine, with metal shavings in the transmission also reported. However, some have reported having a lot less miles than my car. Not sure if the CVT transmission on the early years HRV were faulty as there are reports that the 2019 HRV have an updated CVT transmission. Honda Dealership has given me an estimate of $6,500 to replace the transmission. I have had other Hondas and have never had this issue.
