From the reading I have done, my understanding is that the wires are covered with a fairly new product that was intended to be environmentally conscious, but unfortunately it smells/ tastes yummy to rodents. It ATTRACTS rodents LIKE A SIREN CALL! Honda is aware of this problem. Why are they not issuing a recall?? The service person I spoke with had no idea that the rodents are attracted to the casing and kept telling me that the rodents are attracted to my nice warm car. (We've had unseasonably warm weather here -October/November in Toms River, NJ- It was 79*F according to the thermostat in my car today). I don't know if he was clueless or if he was acting ignorant. I asked if they had wrapped the wires in the pepper tape that Honda makes expressly for this purpose- again he seemed unaware of what I was talking about and recommended that I use moth balls to keep it from happening again. And so I asked again and he said no, they did not wrap the wires with any tape. My concerns:
1. My car began lurching as soon as I pressed the accelerator to leave my driveway. Cars go 50 mph on my road despite the 35 mph signs, I was scared I was going to be rear ended and had to yank the car over to the side of the road immediately, before attempting to turn it around. What if the wires had been only mostly chewed and they came loose while I was on the parkway??
2. Since Honda is aware of this problem, why isn't there a recall- it most definitely could become a safety issue. I could have easily been rear ended, I was very fortunate.
3. $500 is a lot of $ for me, I am disabled and make very low wages. To add insult to injury, WHY aren't they wrapping the pepper tape – that they made expressly for this purpose- around the wires of the customers who have had to go to their service department for this issue??!! They are already under the hood, so to speak. Completely ridiculous and irresponsible. I spent an additional $60+ ordering a couple of products that will hopefully keep the rodents away. Total cost thus far – just under $600.
4. I bought this car used and so I have only owned it for 2 months. I am definitely regretting the purchase.
Had this happen several times--car would not start. Battery, alternator, starter fine when it was checked out. Today they told me wires had been chewed through. Was NOT told about the soy wiring issue when I bought the car. We have 4 other cars with no issues, all parked in same area, but rodents chewed through wiring in Honda. Not happy. Unsure yet if they'll fix it--sounds like they're looking into the wiring tape as a deterrent.
