This car belongs to my 80 year old mother. We found out about the soy based coatings attracting rodents after the new car's fuel pump was chewed through and was leaking oil. We did some research and found this to be a new common problem since the industry changed to soy from petroleum based products. The company refused to cover the cost of repairs. The paperwork says they found a large mouse nest. She had the fuel pump replaced. This was in June.
Shortly after in October of the same year, she found mice were getting into her glove box/pollen filter area. Honda customer support recommended rodent tape. My mom had them wrap the rodent tape on all fuel vapor lines/wiring to prevent further damage. They did not cover this either (which required dropping the fuel tank) although they are fully aware this is a huge problem. She has had continued problems with mice getting into the car.
Honda has suggested using "wolf urine" on the ground around the car.....yup. Have you ever smelled that stuff...lethal. So she now drives around with cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil stuffed in corners of the car, mouse traps on the floorboards, and hot pepper wax sprayed on the underside of the car. We still find mice in the traps.
We have lived in the country all of our lives and NEVER have we had this problem. The industry will deny that soy is the issue. We STRONGLY disagree. Meanwhile, they are making big bucks not only by using cheaper soy coating, but in the costly repairs.
