Dealership claims this is a very rare problem. Shock absorber assembly unit discontinued and not available. Spring coils on backorder for 2 months. No solution offered other than critical order of parts with no estimate of how long it will take. Car cannot be safely driven and I am stranded. I was simply passing through town to visit family on my way home.
Honda Canada will not take responsibility and claims the reason is likely due to my car having been parked for several months this winter. They are offering only partial compensation (a fraction of the cost) and no replacement car while I wait for parts. I had been suspicious of a shock problem since 2013 but twice when dealer checked, I was told my shocks were fine. I wonder now if there was some type of coil failure happening gradually. There is evidence of corrosion at the point where the coils snapped. Dealership said 2007-2008 model Honda Fit only ones without rubber seal in the coil seat. This seems to be a design flaw if it contributed to the corrosion.
My car has only 45k miles (74k kilometers) and has been dealer maintained.
